Title: Programs besides WeeWx for RaspberryPi
Post by: geofb13 on March 25, 2015, 05:41:36 PM
I was just wondering if anyone out there was using anything other than WeeWx with their RaspberryPis? I ask out of curiosity and because there hasn't been much conversation in this part of the forum. I've looked over some other ideas that I found rather quickly through a Google search.

There's a bunch of homemade and shared code floating around Github which is probably worth a look if someone want's to go in that direction.
Github RPI Weather (https://github.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=rpi+weather)

The other software that is both Windows and Linux friendly is wfrog. There is a decent list of stations that are known to work well with it, but it just seems to need anything that likes to work nicely with Weather Station Event Protocol (WESTEP). The only down side is that it hasn't been updated since 2012 unless primary work has moved away from the Google Code page to Github.

wfrog (https://code.google.com/p/wfrog/)

One final thing I wanted to bring up was the RANET/IEPAS Program from UCAR that is working on building a reliable weather station that can be made out of easily purchased off the shelf parts (though they do also rely heavily on 3D printing). With that said I felt like it might be some good additional reading for those making stations with an RPI. Even if you're not you might be interested in their rain gauge and overall station production.

There's a Debian version of http://www.wviewweather.com/

At one time there was a console version of WeatherDisplay that I heard would run on a Pi.  I'm not sure if that's still around or what its capabilities are.

WESTEP sounds interesting.  I've been fishing around for something like that.  Is it still in development?

Outside of it being incorporated in wfrog it doesn't look like much has changed as far as WESTEP. That being said it just appears to be just XML code to compare to incoming data packets. Possibly just for verification purposes. Also unfortunately the domain for westep.org appears to be dead but their still is a little bit of information up on a French weather station site.

Some of the wfrog development group might have moved onto other things though as they do link to Jim Easterbrooks project PyWWS
https://jim-easterbrook.github.io/pywws/doc/en/html/index.html (https://jim-easterbrook.github.io/pywws/doc/en/html/index.html)
Or to PyWeather which is specificially for Davis Pro/Pro2 stations.

As for the WeatherDisplay running on the Pi I had heard about that but also haven't seen anything regarding it recently.

Finally, thanks Bushman for the link to WView, I hadn't seen that.

I just looked at WeatherDisplay's website and they have a specific version for the Raspberry Pi that was updated just last month.

CumulusMX (currently under beta but almost ready for production?) runs on RasPi plus a few other things besides Windows courtesy of Mono.

You would need to request access to the Beta program on the Cumulus Forum.

I'm running Cumulus MX, there is also pywws that has been around a while and is well supported. As pywws is written in python you can also tweak it yourself if you are capable. Edit: I forgot, it is for Fine Offset type stations only I believe.

Thanks for that. Another option for me to consider as well. I'm still trying to figure out what combo I want to go with. Something in conjunction with a Rasberry Pi or most likely Meteobridge with the TP-Link MR3020.

I like your site. I especially like how the trend charts are executed. Is that a function of the Saratoga templates or of Cumulus?

Re the charts,
Depends which site/page you were looking at.
The site in the signature http://silveracorn.nz/weather/ is all Saratoga plus many tweaks and still supplied by the original Cumulus software.

http://silveracorn.nz/cumulusmx/charts.php is all CumulusMX default website output by CumulusMX - charts rendered by Highcharts.
Some of the other pages, console, annual data and the combination today/yesterday & month/year pages have been reworked from separate pages for today, yesterday, month & year which are the standard setup.
These are normally all html but have been reworked to php.

However the  Saratoga site can use the charts rendered by highcharts - just not currently on the Saratoga site.

I have been running weather display consolewd for a few months with no problems. Take a look at you won't be disappointed.

This is the one I was referring to. I liked the popout action for the charts and the fact that it wasn't triggered by a hover event but after you click on them. So is that part of the tweaks you did or is that available out of the box?

That site is all Saratoga templates with mods - one of the modifications being the graphs you refer to.
For the Saratoga template Cumulus primarily delivers data only.
For the current Cumulus, which has been preforming well for many years, the graphs you see are also delivered by Cumulus as images ( see the graphs on the flyout menu). They come in two sizes.
For Cumulus MX (beta) the graphs that will appear on that same page are generated on the webserver by HighCharts from data files supplied by CumulusMX in a tabbed menu on the page.

The panel of 6 mini graphs that pop up when clicked are an addition to the Saratoga template and the functionality is provided by a 3rd party package called Highslide JS ( http://highslide.com/ ).
To get the same functionality with CumulusMX the Highcharts don't work in the highslide setup as highcharts does not generate images so webserver rendered graph image files are generated by jpGraphs from the same source data as the Highcharts graphs. These jpGraph images have a similar look and feel to the Highcharts graphs.

What CumulusMX delivers 'out of the box' can best be seen here http://www.sanday.org.uk/weather/ By 'out of the box' I mean you can have CumulusMX deliver the entire website to your webserver with only some well documented straight-forward configuration steps - so no website programming expertise required.

I am running Meteohub on the Raspberry Pi. I got it initially for Davis Envoy8x support.

See http://wiki.meteohub.de/Setup_RPI (http://wiki.meteohub.de/Setup_RPI) for particular info for RPI, http://wiki.meteohub.de/Main_Page (http://wiki.meteohub.de/Main_Page) for general info.

I am now successfully running OWW (One Wire Weather) on a Raspberry Pi.
OWW is available at http://oww.sourceforge.net/ (http://oww.sourceforge.net/)
I am using to run my old Hobby-Boards lightning detector as a GPC (General Purpose Counter).
I run OWWLOG on my main Linux box pointing to this RPI and have a plotting program called trend to show strikes.
Old stuff, but it works.

Hey - that is great news!  I am having a blast with the Raspberry Pi 2 and I have a box full of 1-Wire stuff I was never able to unload.  For half the cost of a Davis solar sensor I can be in business.  Time to order another Pi!  :)

I recently got my station up and running on a RPI running Debian, Apache, PHP5, wview, and presentation by Saratoga-Weather templates.  It seems to work quite well for me.

My first attempt was with meteohub, but their linux image refused to sync to a NTP time server that was not on the local network.  So I made a back-up image (just in case) and tried wview.

Wview seems to work very well and is a very straightforward install.  It is reporting to Weather Underground, CWOP, and is configured to write backups to my local FTP server once an hour.  Once I got it configured and running, I installed the Saratoga-Weather templates and tweaked it for my particular station.  Not very fancy, but all I really wanted was to check the weather at home while traveling and just to see if this could really be done on a RPI!
