I also made the "mistake" a short while back and "upgraded" to GD's grid hosting. I experienced FTP timeouts as well and noticed when I signed into FTP with FileZilla I would get a message similar to:
220-You are user number 450 of 500 allowed. Just for kicks I signed out then right back in again and the message indicated there were to many FTP users active.
So I called there "tech support" and was told "oh you probably were just unlucky and where put on a more crowded server".
Wow, nice response GD. I can see from some of these recent responses that I'm wasn't the only unlucky person out there.
Needless to say since this wasn't the first unpleasant run in that I've had with them and I have since changed hosts.
The one that I read that is particularly irritating is:
If you wish to prevent this IP blocking from occurring, you will need to purchase a Virtual Dedicated or Dedicated Server. These servers allow you to have much more control over your hosting and do not have the same limitations as a shared hosting account."
True, you will have much more control and different limitations but they will come at a much higher cost.
I believe it is a side effect of the grid/cloud architecture that is causing these issues (at least with GD) and
unless your site is consuming an inordinate amount of resources (CPU/RAM/Database connections etc.) an upgrade
to a VPS/Dedicated Server is probably unnecessary.
So what to do? You could have GD move you back to a traditional "shared" server. Hopefully, then things would go back to the way they were.
Or you could move to a different host. There are a LOT to choose from so I won't go into a long list here. Some include, E-Rice, Hostgator and 1 and 1 Hosting.
An excellent resource for researching potential hosts is:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/One thing to keep in mind is UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH and UNLIMITED DISK SPACE are a
gimmick. Think about it, most sites are not going to use 100's of gigs of space or bandwidth. If they did shared hosting providers wouldn't be able to provide services so cheap. What you will run into way before this are resource limitations. There was a recent thread here where GD sent out an email about the number of files in a given directory being too large,
a resource issue. The current FTP issue with GD's Grid computing, also a
resource issue. UNLIMITED offers have Limits. Read the TOS of any host you sign up with
carefully FIRST.
