Weatherlink 5.8.2 on USB stick
« on: September 14, 2017, 02:18:09 AM »
Good Morning,

We have recently purchased a Kodlix Z8311  mini PC for running a couple of webcams and VWS from a Davies VP2

It is to replace an aging winXP machine - the power consumption of the mini  is minimal.

However, the install from a memory stick stops whilst trying  to install the .netframework  on to the mini -
I copied the files from our original Weatherlink 5.8.2 CD which worked fine just now installing onto a Win10 laptop.

Any ideas where I could be going wrong, please?

David

Did you perform a Low Level Format? If you did, what Format did you use...............

You might want to try FAT or FAT32. That is what I would do.

Dalecoy, Do you mean I should try a different version of Weatherlink? And is it available online? David

I don't know if that would fix the problem.  I just noticed that info, and thought it might help.  Please let us know if it does.

I formatted another memory stick with fat 32 and tried to run with that, but it is still telling me to install    .NetFramework  and when I agree to that, it comes up with:-

"not enough storage is available to process this command"

but there looks to be plenty of space available in there:

Think you need to get hold of a _full_ copy (ie not just the update download) for WL v6.0.3 and try with that. Suspect you've got Catch 22 at present in that you can't install the 603 update until 582 is installed, but 582 won't install (probably because of a bug that was fixed in a later version).

Davis provided me with a link to an alternate installer for 6.0.3.
Would need to check I still have that image following a drive failure.

My issue was that WL 6.0.3, from the CD would terminate the installation before completion.
In IT & have numerous machines here & I could install on some but not others.

The alternate installer worked fine on the ones that failed.

The support the did identify the issue.

The shipped install is known to fail on systems that already have a CP2102 USB/Serial device already installed.

Might be worth see in if the same applies for the 5.8.2.

Cheers.

I have zero idea whether this would help or not, but I have 6.0.0 full build on CD if I could somehow send it to you, then 6.0.3 would be put on top.

Thanks a lot for the offer of the offer of the CD, but as Phil23 said, it looks like the problem is probably with the machine which is here:

 http://www.kodlix.com/275/

But as I said in my first post:  " the install from a memory stick stops whilst trying  to install the .netframework  on to the mini - I copied the files from our original Weatherlink 5.8.2 CD which worked fine just now installing onto my Win10 laptop."

So perhaps as Phil23 said, I think I should ask Davis if they could provide me with a link to an alternate installer for 6.0.3.

It isn't urgent yet, the old PC is still working fine, just planning for the future.

Try this...

Have a look in Device manager for a the serial port driver & if it's there remove it.

You may need to enable "Show Hidden Devices" if it's not plugged in.
Show Hidden devices sometimes needs an environment variable set;

devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1, Google will explain where that's set.

Try the install again with the CP2102 driver removed after all the above.

Cheers

Phil.

I tried all the above that Phil suggested, but its not showing the  CP2102 driver.

Seeing as I am having other issues with the mini PC (no wifi or bluetooth support), I think I shall try and send it back to the supplier for an exchange or refund.

cheers, David

I suspect that the USB driver is not relevant but right now it's impossible to disentangle what might be an issue with the USB stick (or installing from that) from any hurdle in installing v582 on this particular PC.

Can you not borrow a USB CD drive from somewhere and try installing from that? If that still doesn't work then as per upthread comments you need to try with a full v603 copy. Just because your v582 installed on one PC doesn't automatically mean it will work with any PC. IIRC there were some installation issues with older versions of WL on certain PC's (and v582 is relatively old now).

Is it trying to install itself to the USB and not the hard drive on the computer?  Also you may have a permissions issue with the location that you are installing it to.

Thanks, thats a good point, I shall try borrowing a portable CD drive and try it that way.

What about a Plan-B...

Ditch Weatherlink & try CumulusMX.

That sounds a bit radical after 15 yrs of VWS!  would the mini computer run straight from the Davis data logger with CumulusMX and nothing else installed? David

My VP2 is USB connected to an older HP laptop.

Cumulus just loads on boot & connects directly to the station.

I can view the CumulusMX interface from any PC just by putting the Laptops IP in a browser.

It currently uploads to WUnderground, Met Office WOW & APRS/CWOP, as well as my own site, which is pretty much the default Cumulus page.

good news,  I consulted microsoft here:  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/dotnet-35-windows-10

and enabled .Net framework, and using a USB powered CD drive, installed WL from the disc. So now we should be good to go. It will be 2 weeks before I get back to the weather station to try it.

thanks a lot for your advice

There is an issue with the 6. version.  I saw it when I was searching.

Thanks for the download link.
