Whoa!
« on: September 14, 2008, 08:09:20 PM »
I've been doing a lot of work this weekend to reconfigure my webcam including relocating it to get it up above the trees, using MovieSalsa to generate a time lapse, ImageSalsa to generate the still, etc., etc. About an hour ago I was playing with the codecs trying find that perfect compromise when the image on the cam seemed to go screwy. Everything turned orange on the image but I wasn't messing with any of the actual camera settings. "Just what I need" says I.

So I open up the blinds to find that my camera wasn't messed up, that was the actual color of the sky!

Here's the time lapse (it's not updating just yet):

The file is pretty big (about 12M) and it's all still in the experimental stage so ignore the "Demo Edition". Watch starting just about 19:00 tonight.

Man! I just watched the whole thing!  That was really neat... Besides the color of the sky, I watched the formation of thunderclouds and that was really cool!

Nice Job!

One of the cool things that the time lapse shows is how our summer weather works here on the SWFL Gulf coast. If you watch the development throughout the day you can see the daily shift of the winds from offshore (right to left in the images) to onshore (left to right). The cooler air coming off the gulf hits the hot air over land and the storms build. It's not hard to understand why we have so many heavy thunderstorms when you see a time lapse like we had today. You can really see the different wind directions at different levels as the day progress as well. I always knew this was happening just from looking at the wind graphs but it's quite another thing to see it visually. I should have tackled this project long ago.

On a side note, I've got the file size down to just short of 6M. 24 hours, 1 frame captured every 30 secs, with a total length of about 3:30 minutes. That may be a little long but I like the resolution (in time) that the current setup gives me so I think I'm happy with where things are. I still need to get it uploading automatically. Now I'm just waiting on my license for ImageSalsa and I'll be ready to switch over from webcamXP.

It didn't see it mentioned on your site, but I'm curious to know what kind of webcam you're using. It seems to have decent low light response.

It's a Toshba IK-WB15A.

The lowlight would be even better if I could sneak across the canal and shot out some of those street lights.

WOW, what a show!
I've been collecting snapshots of the sky for years and this one is a "10".
West central Florida does have some interesting sunsets.
Thanks for the look.

Reminds of one of those 70's apocalypse movies, like Damnation Alley.

That's a really cool time-lapse!  I liked those cumulus clouds passing over the updrafts and the clouds "turning around" and going back inland!  8-)

I created a time lapse archive page and moved yesterday's video over there:

Pretty lucky to get something that neat on the second day of working on the time lapses.

Edit: And I have the the time lapse set up pretty much the way I want it now too. Just waiting on my license key for ImageSalsa now so I can get rid of the "Demo Edition".

That's an awesome color scheme !!!
Seldom ever do we ever get anything remotely close to that around here!
Great web Cam also!
