Different Things to Look At
« on: March 22, 2012, 06:19:39 AM »
Look at the two images below.  The map shows two lows close together.  One has an occluded front (that is not rare, but a lot of people don't really understand them).

From Wikipedia:

Quote
An occluded front is formed during the process of cyclogenesis when a cold front overtakes a warm front. When this occurs, the warm air is separated (occluded) from the cyclone center at the Earth's surface. The point where the warm front and the occluded front meet (and consequently the nearest location of warm air to the center of the cyclone) is called the triple point.

There are two types of occlusion, warm and cold. In a cold occlusion, the air mass overtaking the warm front is cooler than the cool air ahead of the warm front, and plows under both air masses. In a warm occlusion, the air mass overtaking the warm front is not as cool as the cold air ahead of the warm front, and rides over the colder air mass while lifting the warm air.

A wide variety of weather can be found along an occluded front, with thunderstorms possible, but usually their passage is associated with a drying of the air mass. Additionally, cold core funnel clouds are possible if shear is significant along the cold front. Occluded fronts are indicated on a weather map by a purple line with alternating semicircles and triangles pointing in direction of travel. Occluded fronts usually form around mature low pressure areas.

If you look close, you can see the two lows on the radar map.  Those are some really strong lows.  I hope the weather isn't too bad today and tomorrow.

I saw that too. Looks cool
Our weather person talked about one being a cut off low.

The upside-spinning off rain showers that many people need.
We may get up to .5 inches.  not enough, but we will take it.

I've also have been watching that low hanging over Oklahoma. It's been lingering around there for a little while.

Reason for a lot of the rain we've had over this past week.

It might produce enough rain to officially break the drought in Oklahoma.  It wasn't too rainy this morning for President Obama to give a speech at a pipeline storage yard this morning north of Ripley.
