Lake effect snow season is here UPDATED
« on: December 31, 2009, 02:43:42 AM »
UPDATEDWell lake effect has continued since wednesday night last week although accumulations have been on the light side it's been consistant.
The drier air has been keeping totals down but humidity is on the rise and barometer finally dropping a bit , this should spark more lake effect through the week  i've only picked up 15.7 since last week but other areas are approaching 24 inches since the new year . the winds have been more northerly and the northwest wind is the sweet spot for my location..
How are others doing along the other great lakes , including our neighbors in Ontario \:D/

This is a picture from work monday after the lake effect, actually it's still going but not as intense.

I was just curious what your lake effect snow events have been like this year for those of you in states surounding the Great lakes.
Our season here has been slow to say the least , by this time last year there was almost 3 times the snow for the season thus far. Last year was above average but not anywhere close to a record. It's starting to look better in the forecast for more snow... \:D/ We're below ave for snow and overall precip for the year so snow is welcome.

Here in Oregon, OH we don't usually get a lot of "Lake effect" snow. But so far this year we are low on snow of any kind.  We have only had a few light snowfalls of around an inch each. :-(

The south end of Lake Michigan had some lake effect snow this season but mostly system snow. Usually mid January to mid February is when the lake effect snows kick in.
This weekends forecast is calling for twelve inches or more of the lake stuff due to the cold front from Wisconsin and Illinois.
Depth of the snow is always a guess depending on how long the bands are and if the winds are steady.

Here in our part of Ontario just east of Lake Huron we do get a lot of lake effect but this winter nothing at all until Tuesday this week when we got a dumping of over 12".  Just a few miles east to the London city limits very little, and that happens often.  We are known as the snow belt of Ontario because of Lake Huron to our west and of its size it does not fully freeze over.  Enjoying reading my Canadian Weather but haven't gotten to the Winter section for Ontario/Quebec.

Our snow belt got off to a slow start this year (lee of Huron and Georgian Bay), November was way down up there (0 measurable down here in Toronto), then in 2 or 3 days they got over a yard of snow just before xmas... the recent cold snap and north west wind has got some areas in the 6 inchs every 8 hours type snow fall.  dont have any hard numbers, but looks like they are catching up.

Drove through Ontario yesterday.  They were getting pounded and wound up closing down 402.  Added 2 hours to my drive.  I thought for a short bit that I would be spending the night in a drift on some backroad.

My hometown also got pounded over the holiday weekend.  24" and counting with a LE warning ongoing through 4PM tomorrow.

Wow , those Lake Michigan convergent bands can really put it down. When you guys get you really get it. We get ours in more frequent lesser amounts most of the time , but we do get some big snowfalls as well.

sounds allot like we had . but we are making progress with more snow through Saturday forecasted I think we'll be average soon.

Well things are back quiet till tonight then allittle more lake effect through friday night but nothing to write home about.
Monday through monday night NWS Marquette 35 miles west of me picked up 14.5 inches...I only got 1.5 inches
The winds this year have been consistantly N ....not a northwest wind in a while like usual .. so i'm missing out on the higher amounts.
Has anyone else noticed different dominant wind directions compaired to last year?

Well it looks like the lake effect machine is finally winding down with artic high pressure over south dakota moving east..we had measurable snow everyday since 14th of dec except for one day.
Not even close to a record which was broke last year something around 32 days.
We're still below avg at least in the northwest wind belts of the U.P. including myself. It's still a good start considering the NWS was forecasting well below avg snowfall. Our average 189.7 so still a ways to go ..but with snow possible in the next 3.5 to 4 months anything is possible.

Well the Lake effect season is chugging along slow but sure, this month I have rec'd 41.4 inches 105cm
For the year 88.4 in (224.5cm) Marquette NWS 100.6 in (255.5cm) Both of us have reported below ave for the year.
The Lack of sytems moving through have been very few. the track as everyone knows has been well south this winter
Most of our moisture has been from Lake superior.. It's also good the temps have been relatively warmer this year so the Lake is mostly ice free.
Usually by February the Lake has a moderate amount of ice on the south shorelines as well as the interior areas. This will allow a good month for february lake effect if the cold air is supplied.
