After a reboot on the PC the Corsair's automatically was the default device when I plugged them in so all is good now. A reboot cures all sorts of troubles.

Put a sound card in. Man what a difference. Didn't have to disable onboard audio in bios so that was nice.

What did you have onboard before that?

Yes

You had the Gigabyte board so you probably had the Intel HD Realtek audio, correct?

Yes, case is the Corsair Graphite 600T Gaming Case. Love the case very easy to work with.

Same case here and, like you, love the layout of it. The only thing thing I found goofy about it was the setup for the top-side USB 3 plug. I don't quite get why they didn't just adapt it to the mobo header or, at least, optioned that approach.

Good looking box you put together.

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCIe Sound Card

Cheap and sounds great.

Now you got me looking at sound cards... The onboard doesn't sound all that bad to me but with you saying it's a substantial difference, now I have to consider one.

Best card I ever had was the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 but I don't see that type of offering anymore and nothing but problems for the Rev with anything newer than XP.

The thing about sound cards is that if you have crappy speakers you won't notice a difference. My PC speakers are Bose and are 2.1 but my headphones are 7.1. So when I use my headphones I put it on 7.1 in the Creative  control panel. No problems with the install on Win 7 Home either. Snapped the card in the PCI-Express slot, installed drivers, changed sound card to default device and was done in 10 minutes.

Here is a picture of the sound card installed. Its the blue thing.  Couldn't get the dang white sticker off without it peeling so I left it. Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture. Didn't feel like breaking out the DSLR.

I still have my old Altec-Lansing 4.1 speakers (2003?) collecting dust with my old retired XP Pro machines. Dual-cone sub that's as big as either of those Antec cases. It'll be too boomy in the smaller room I use now for 'The Beast' so dust they will continue to collect. Right now, I'm just running a cheap set of 2.1 that fill the need for the moment. Haven't had much time for toons lately at home.

On another aside, I finally got around to putting in the wire router/loom on my cam shelf. Now I can stop worrying about the cams moving around if I hit a wire or two. Also replaced the Wx machine's ('Junior') basic UPS with a Pure Sine Wave type and a second one for 'The Beast'. Both CyberPower CP850PFCLCD.
