Has anybody had a Davis logger (be it any 65xx or WM 7862/55) fail?

Yes.  I contacted Davis and eventually decided to send mine in for repair.  However, somewhere on this forum are directions on how to try to reset the logger. Have you removed the power and the batteries from the console yet? If not, try it.

Give it a minute or so, then put the batteries back in, then the power supply.

Very rare (possibly less so with 7862 but that's an awful long time ago for most users), but obviously if a big mains spike or nearby lightning strike has occurred then any device is potentially vulnerable.
