thermo ???
« on: February 06, 2009, 07:16:52 AM »
So this morning I'm watching the news. They claim a low of 32. My staion is telling me its 23. I go out and check my birdfeeder which is about 1 1/2in deep with water. Frozen solid. Do you think i have a problem with a sensor or maybe i'm just in a low area. How on earth could i verify it right or wrong?? I should say this sensor is about 18 in off the ground.

Thanks for helping the newbie

well i just hung my taylor instant read cooking therm on a string for 10 min beside the Thermo and it said 25.6 versus 23on the station sensor. Maybe i 'm just in a low area.

There can be large differences in temperature in small areas.  It is my understanding (and I'm no expert by any means) that areas where there are concrete, pavement, lights, etc., can act as a "heat island"  and be warmer than surrounding, more "vegetative" areas.  The temperature reported by your station may have came from the airport or the tv station.  If your birdfeeder is frozen, it's not over 32!

Click on the following link, scroll down to the bottom, and look at the varying temperatures in your area:

If you look just above the list, you can select all, just the personal weather stations, the official stations, or a map with all the stations shown.

If you look at the Wundermap http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=28.89863968&lon=-81.24623871&zoom=10&pin=Deltona%2c%20FL version of Slowmodem's link, you can see a listing to the right of the map.  Any station that starts with a KFL is probably a personal weather station like ours. A MADIS designation after the station name is probably a government operated weather station.

The standard height for you temp sensor should be 6' above the ground.

Thanks,

Hey Anthony, f86sabjf
Not to split frog hairs, but CWOP recommends Temp sensor at 5' above grassy surface. Page 8 Section 3.2 "siting" ; Figure 5, page 44.

I don't think you will see any difference between 5' or 6'. But 18" above the ground is deffinately to close.

Thanks,
Anthony

The reason i was worried was an avocado plant i've raised from seed. This little guy is only 8months old. I guess it just surprised me how cold my yard is compared to the local tv . Thats one of the reason i put the sensor so low to get an accurate reading on where it was living at.

I'm using a bed sheet wrapped around it and a drop light put underneath with the plant..
