Uploading Weather Station Info (help please)
« on: November 12, 2006, 08:28:56 PM »
Hello All,

Forgive the "newbie" question....but your help is appreciated.

Making a long story short, our school has hooked up a weather station donated to us by a local university. Everything is running very smoothly (It is an Oregon Scientific WMR 968).  The software that came with the program is VWS.

My problem is that it is the "base" software and now cannot upload any information (et al, we'd like to post it on our school website, but the webserver for our site is not at our location).

As much as I'd like to use VWS, our school will not be able to buy this software in the near future. Can anyone recommend a free program (if there even is one) that can be downloaded where I can upload the data to something like Weather Underground?

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Sorry, but I'm not aware of any freebies that will do a good job for you.  I read in your post on Ambient that you have the Base Edition.  Couldn't you somehow get the $79 to upgrade to the internet Edition?  Maybe ask a local merchant to sponsor the site in exchange for a banner on the main page?

I don't know of any free SW for the OS that does WU uploads. For the money, Weather Display would be my choice ($70 last time I looked). Brian provides what can only be described as astounding tech support. WD can be a bit of a challenge to get setup but the forum at http://www.weather-watch.com/smf/index.php is an excellent source for working your way through it.

Of course based on your comments this may not be a viable solution for your situation either. I don't know of a "free" solution for the OS but admittedly, my knowledge of the OS and what's available is limited.

Thank you both for getting back to me.

I appreciate your help.

Eventually I think I can get the money's together to make the purchase. As you can imagine, I've been spending time getting it together and am anxious to get it on the net, now having to wait a bit.

Just have to play a waiting game a bit (BTW...good idea about the local merchant...I don't know the school policy, but worth a route to try).

braun,

As Rick and anole have said, I do not know of any free software that will do that.

I have heard of a free software for the OS weather stations that you can take a look at here.

I can relate. I installed a VPII for our local elementary school and thought we were going to be able to get it up and online with CWOP, WU and their own weather site. Turns out it wasn't that easy. The school district has all PCs locked down pretty tight (in a server 2003 environment) and wouldn't let me install the firewall client on the teacher's PC, so we weren't able to do CWOP (which uses telnet not FTP). Add to that that the PC was off all summer so we stopped uploading to WU as well. Then on top of that the teacher's were all reassigned this year so the PC that WeatherLink was installed on got reloaded with a "fresh" install which wiped the WeatherLink install.

Bottom line, this was one of those "looks better in theory" deals. Too bad really since  having a station at the elementary school would have been a big part of my pie-in-the-sky Pine Island Weather Network.

A rather nice program that works well with the OS WMR-968 is FreeWX-WI.
The web site seems to be down at the moment however here is the link: http://www.FreeWX.net

Wow, if FreeWX & FreeWx-Wi are as good as they sound, there should be a section in this forum that covers this software. It looks pretty good, based on reading the information on the FreeWx website (http://insvr1.midcoastwater.com.au/FreeWX/_sgg/f10000.htm).

Isn't it great how a simple question being asked results in what could be a huge benefit for anyone who uses a compatible OS weather station? Guess that's why we all really like the openess of the Wxforum!!  :D

Oops, just noticed there is a section for FreeWx but no entries have been made, so far...

It is very good and very impressive especially for being free! I know the author, Andy, works very hard at keeping it moving forward and helping anyone that has any issues. I used it myself for a few months when I first got interested in this wonderful little hobby of our's.

Andy also is the creator of FreeWCAM, a very easy to use and also free web cam program. I still use it for the web cam images on my site. http://insvr1.midcoastwater.com.au/FreeWX/_sgt/m5_1.htm

Look for FreeWX , written by a guy over here in Australia.... it's free and works with the OS stations.

If somewhere down the track the school decides to buy well written commercial software, then I suggest you take a good look at Weather Display.

There's always VPLive... no graphics, but you can't beat the cost! :)

I don't know if this topic is still in need of an answer, but WUHU can be used as an add-on to VWS base edition and upload to WU. Plus, it's free!

Note: I haven't tried this method myself and it may not work. But, other people claim it works. :D

Too bad he doesn't also have one for Lacrosse weather stations.  It has been one of my worse night mares!  :?
