WS-1400-IP Radiation Shield Modifications?

I have the WS-1400-IP and have notice the proverbial temp sensor spike of 1.5-2.5 degrees in the morning from other area sensor arrays in the area (some shaded).

So I got to wondering if replacing the smallish radiation shield with something more robust might help. Some thing like the ambient weather srs100lx. Could that be retrofitted onto the bottom of the 1400s sensor array?  Would it really make any difference in the shielding spijes and variations still being passive?

My ws1001 currently measures 18.2 ° C the ws2801 (Lacrosse technology) with an active radiation shield measures 19.4 ° C the nearest Metar (5 km) is at 18.5 ° C° wonder if the radiation shield of the ws1001 is not more efficient.

I stared working on something like this the past weekend. Here is a picture of what I have in mind. The bottom will have a bracket that will be attached to the mast to help with heavy winds. At the top, remove some of the existing shields and extend the sensors in the new housing. The top will/might/not sure yet  :-), screwed into the top using the existing mounting method.
At his stage it will be powered 24/7 from an AC source.

Any input will be much appreciated. Yes, go for it/ don't do it/ you are crazy. :grin:

Awesome.  What shield upgrade are you thinking of using?  I like the idea of extending rather than replacing.  That way you can still keep the same mounting method.   And I like the bracket idea for the bottom - brilliant :D   BUT ... will the wires of the sensors allow you to extend them down a bit (enough extra wire)  ... OR will you have to cut and lengthen them? 

DO IT !!!  Take pictures and post back     \:D/

My 1400 is mounted right now ... but I plan to be taking it down pretty soon to replace the metal top rail fence post with a piece of Schedule 80 1 1/4 electrical gray 5" pipe.  I am just not comfortable with the potential "lightening rod" I have created.

Using the Ambient Weather SRS 100 LX Radiation Shield

I wrote Ambient yesterday about using the SRS 100 LX shield  ... "Would it be possible to retrofit this radiation Shield on to a 1400 ISS sensor array? Would it give better radiation Shield than the smaller stock shield on the 1400 sensor array"

And they responded ... "Sorry, it is not possible, although the WS-1400 sensor array has been proven to be very accurate."

So I guess with any mod we are on our own.

I will grind that lip down on my belt sander to prevent rain from collecting there. Then insert a plexi glass deflector just below the fan to divert the fan air, preventing it from being sucked back in.
I should have the bowls today and will do a mock setup with pictures.

I want a 24/7 fan. Sometimes it is really humid and calm here in Houston. Night time and early morning before the sun is up.

I can understand that.  Here is another great idea done on a Vantage Vue that had no fan ... but had a radiation shield much the same size as the 1400

Looks promising. As far as the speed controller, completely unnecessary IMHO, I run my 67CFM fan full bore, 24/7, 365.

Update: Last night I cut a piece of plexi glass in a circle, cut the hole for the fan, drill the holes for the all thread and fan mounting. This will be the fan air deflector.
I also cut 1/2" spacers on the table saw to make sure they are all the same length and it is quick :-)

CW2274, Thanks for the fan info. I had a look and I have is a 48cfm CPU cooling fan. Full speed it is. :-) Keep it simple.

Plenty strong. Try to make sure the flow in the sensor chamber is not restricted by the design.

Making progress. Removed the lips on all of the bowls.
Make an orientation mark on every bowl. That way if your drill marks are off a bit or you drill a bit off center, they will still go together. Drill a hole, put a screw in to prevent to bowls from moving. Drill the second hole and repeat. Drill the last hole. Yep, did not pay attention to the orientation marks when I marked the drill holes the first time   :oops:

I do like the LED idea, i converted my VP2 DFARS to a 24hr AC or is it DC, one of those lol
Reason i changed to to 24hr was because on solar when the fan 1st came on in the morning
there was a noticeable 1C drop, i would always recommend 24hr if its feasible, as for the LED,
damn, that means i have to pull the mast down, ok, so thats not really a problem, its telescopic,
its the setting of the guy lines that seems to take all day :( but, it needs doing anyway seen i
caused a shadow for the OS SIAJ when i mounted it directly below the Davis solar/uv shelf  #-o

I have made various types of shields over the last 10 years, the plates (2 versions), a large SS
and my latest for the OS temp/hum sensor is this creation, it has a fan at the bottom sucking in
and a fan at the top sucking out



The bowl shape has a purpose, forgot what its called now but its meant to help the air to enter the shield




















This is the 24hr fan mod for the Davis shield and relocation bracket lol

Bashy, I see your have a 3 wire fan, so you are good to add the LED. Btw, my resistor is a 1.5k

Won't that cause problems such as buffeting or maybe reduced air flow if the fans does not spin at the same speed. Or is it just a backup in case one fails?

OK  \:D/ it is done. But, someone should have went with option 3, "Dude you are crazy"  :-)

Have to admit it was fun building this. Thanks to every one giving input and all the ones who did it before me. Hats off to you  =D>

Powered everything off, console, OIP so not get false readings being recorded and posted. Removed the stock shield and de-soldered the humidity and temp sensors from the ISS. Re-soldered the sensors to the extended wires and hot glued the assembly on the fan guard.

Put everything together and mounted it to the ISS, minus the bottom two stock shields.
I also added this to the power line going to the fan. Hopefully it will keep some of the bad stuff out. I will also add one near the power supply.

Then that sinking feeling when I powered the console on and it showed -4.7F here in Houston.  :shock:  Then I remembered I did not remove the batteries  from the ISS. After some time the temp started to rise slowly. I think there is a some hysteresis build in to smooth out sharp temp changes. Anyway, the temp is now the same as the indoor unit right next to it.  :grin:

For those who want to do this mod, I would recommend you have or have access to a woodshop. I am lucky and my garage (man cave) is a woodshop  :grin:

I don't understand the thermometer on these. One right next to me reads a little low in the daytime, but another up the road a bit reads too high in the mornings...

How is your temp now dupreezd? How about the anemometer? Some have found it sticks.

MrM1, a thermometer on the roof will read a bit high, so not surprised that you have a slight biased warm.
