Title: What's You Hottest Temperature this Year?
Post by: Farmtalk on June 09, 2011, 02:14:21 PM
Ok, so we have been talking about how hot it has been lately. What is THE hottest temperature that has hit your local town?

94 degrees on May 31. Much of our area was in the upper 90s that day.

I'm not sure that "hottest" is an entirely accurate word for it, but 22C is the maximum temperature I have recorded so far this year, on June 6th.

23.6C on 2nd June
Last year's maximum of 26.3C was in May - so we don't expect many days above 25C
30C is very unusual.

79F (26C) on Saturday June 4, if you (like KeithBC says) consider that "hot" (which it sorta is for June around here)

Should we update this thread every day, as the days will tend to get predictably warmer almost daily for the next couple of months?  (At least when the sun comes out, around here.)

In my back yard we have hit 101.

Other places in South Texas along the Rio Grande have been near 110.

Yeah, I think it would be kind of cool to update our highest temperature this year.

I'll start:

New highest temperature is 94F set on June 9th. It was a hot day, with the average dew point being 66F!

97.1 (36.16 celsius) on May 22 for this year; however on a rolling 12 months hight temp was 101.8 (38.77 celsius) the 15th of June.  That's also the highest temp seen in my almost 2 years of having a real weather station.

High temp of the day doesn't bother me as much as high temps over night. It usually cools to the mid 60's at night in my area of NE PA but when it stays above 74 over night I find it rather uncomfortable sleeping. I don't care to run the AC to sleep -prefer window fan and a cool evening breeze on on the deck at night.
So far 92.5 was the daytime high here.
Title: Re: What's You Hottest Temperature this Year?
Post by: Farmtalk on June 12, 2011, 08:56:39 PM
I agree, I like lows to fall to around 60 for some cool breeze, and 74 IS uncomfortable

30 years in the SW Deserts and I'm still that way myself. Nice upper 50s - low 60s at nite with that cool breeze flowing thru the windows.

Still 99.5 for the high on June 1st. Low 100s forecast during the week.

We have hit 100 one time since 1991, and that was 104 in 2007. That day, my family's car broke down on the highway, and we were stuck in the heat for almost 2 hours!!!

June 7. Minneapolis  101.8F  By the way, that is the hottest day since 2006!

It's surprising Minnesota would beat my part of Oklahoma in getting to a 100.  It may crack 100 here by this weekend.

I just recieved my weather station 8 days ago, so I don't know if we've had hotter, but 96.8 with an heat index of 111* is the hottest I have seen since then.
Until I get my data logger, and VWS software, is there a way on the Davis Vantage pro2 to see the highs and lows? (Other than the small graph with dots and lines!) I have not found it if there is.

EDIT: THERE IT IS! 100.0 with 6% humidity and a 21 on the dew!

Ouch 118  :!: at Sky Harbor and you with just about 114!    It even looks like it was so hot it turned your computer font red Jeanette!

You're absolutely right about that Monsoon moisture is moving in.  A pretty large complex of storms to your south last night setup a good surge
that's moving through this morning.  Doesn't look like you will be getting as close to your record today.  ;)

Our friend Matt from WeatherBus has been posting a discussion about this latest push of moisture on the SWN forum.  Come on over and check it out!  8-)

The reason why Buckeye hit 121F and Phoenix Sky Harbor did not is due to the elevation. The area he is in is about 970 feet in elevation. Sky Harbor is at 1,135 feet in elevation. That makes enough difference to show a 3-5 degree increase in temperatures.

A new high for the year was set here today, July 5th.  It got up to 106.  It also got up to 106 at the local airport, also a new high for the year for them.  Hopefully, some relief, however, rather slight is coming starting Wednesday evening when a cool front approaching gives a 30% chance for thunderstorms and high temperature dropping to the upper 90s for Thursday and Friday.

how does upper 90s compare to average highs?

The average high for July 6th is 92. For all of July it's 94.

Weather Synopsis...Isolated showers will be possible late tonight from southeast Oklahoma into parts of western north Texas. Rainfall, if any, will be spotty and light. Isolated showers and storms will occur again Wednesday afternoon with a modest increase in rain chances expected Thursday across mainly northern Oklahoma. Meanwhile, the extreme heat is forecast to persist into next week.

I live just about 80 miles from Bunty; my hottest day sofar this year was June 27th at 105.6 degrees.  Some people here are beginning to compare this summer to the summer of 1980 for Tulsa, which was no fun.  It was rated as the warmest summer on Tulsa record, with an average temperature of 88.0.

Uhmmm... My hottest day so far is 74.0 in my back yard and 69.9 on the water side.... The marine influence creates a real microclimate.  In fact, I have gotten messages from Wunderground that my data is incorrect.  I installed two temp sensors and report two temperatures on my site. It will be 10+ degrees warmer on the protected side of my house during a North (off the water) wind.  In a south wind they match exactly.    My current VWS Graph looks like:

Been gathering data since 2006. Just tied my all time record high of 107.8° set in 2006 at 3:45 today(7/7/11).
Highs in July this year:
7/1/11: 102.7°
7/2/11: 104.1°
7/3/11: 105.5°
7/4/11: 107.4°
7/5/11: 103.5°
7/6/11: 103.0°
7/7/11: 107.8°
7/8/11  104.9°
(My spare VP2 just hit 108°)
11 12 days in row so far above 100°. Not a record run by any means (so far) but hot never-the-less.

Holy moly Doug!! That is incredible!!!

I just bought my $15 thermometer with max/min and the highest for it is 87F....

next few days forecasts for Procious though:

Friday: 83
Saturday: 84
Sunday: 89
Monday: 89

Considering that this is almost 1500ft above sea level, and dew points around 70 on sunday and monday, it will be toasty, but not like Doug!

The lowlands are expected to reach the mid 90s Sunday and Monday; the highest temp for Charleston, WV this year is 94F.

Bunty.... I almost choked on that line..... My wife would probably agree.  We are significantly cooler than all the areas around us.  The marine influence really moderates the temps.  If you go out on the coast it is even cooler.  We have had the coldest and wettest spring and early summer in years.  Seattle finally broke 80 yesterday.  The high was 84 and people were complaining about the heat.... Sheesh....

Our summers you can usually plan on mid 70's to mid 80's as normal highs.  However... in my front yard (waterside) it's not gonna happen very often.  When the wind blows over the 52 degree water, it's tough to heat it up to 80 by the time it hits the house.  The local bloggers just did some interesting articles on "Superior Mirages".  I did a post on it and then the ABC affiliate in Seattle did another blog about it with a photo I sent them.  This really demonstrates the temperature differential that the cool water creates.  Here is the link: http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/125168054.html?blog=y (http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/125168054.html?blog=y)  It actually bends light.....

Not that hot comparing to others.

Today, Saturday, 7/9/11, the high got up to 110, rounded up from 109.8, for the year's new high.  At the local airport it was 111.  In looking for some degree of relief, since the month started storms have formed most afternoons in the High Plains of eastern Colorado and western Kansas and moved southeast, but they have always been dissipating before they can get here.

The heat wave here is becoming unusually bad as it continues on.  It also hit 110 in Oklahoma City today for an all time record high for the day. It also ties the record for the hottest July day ever.  The last time it got that hot in Oklahoma City was on July 6, 1996.   Highs of around 110, or a little higher were common in central and western Oklahoma today. Highest high was apparently 114.  It will be interesting to see if Sunday is another record breaker.  I would sooner hope not.

The hottest here in KY has been 94.1 back in early June. We have had 14 days over 90 so far this year. Those are more like August temps.
The forecast high is today is 91 and for some reason we are under a heat advisory for the first time. Maybe it is the higher humidity factored in triggering the advisory.

Humidity must have been a factor, because east of you in Charleston, WV, the high is also 91...With dew points near 70...

Just looked on wunderground....87 now with dpoint of 68 makes heat index 91.....

Since I have bought my new thermometer, it has not reached 90 in the higher mountains of Procious (1200 ft approx), but Charleston has hit it many times....96 tomorrow is the high!

My station had it's all time record broken today at 108.5.  I worry about my a/c unit when this kind of prolonged heat happens.  I check it every year, but this is just a lot.

Here in Southern Oklahoma with 6 yrs of data I set a new "all time" record of 108.7° on 7/9/11. The "warmest day" record was also set the 9th of 97.3°. This makes all 10 days in July above 100° with a total this year  above 100° of 19 days. Just trying to keep the wife's plants alive......forget the grass. We have only mowed 3 times this year were in a "normal" year we would mow about once a week. Hot and dry sums it up....the city is talking about water rationing soon.

Also, how about this, 73F dew point, making current heat index 99!

I have set the highest temperature since I got my thermometer...It used to be 87.4F (We live in mostly shade, and in higher terrain), but it is already up to 89.4F!

So close to breaking it! 93F was the official high today in Charleston, just 1 degree from tying the hottest temperature of the year there at 94F, which has been reached twice this year.

My thermometer reached its highest this year at 89.7F, which beat the old record of 87.4F (I have only had this thermometer for two weeks). That is still pretty high considering we live in 75% shade, and are around 1200ft above sea level....

NWS is calling for 94F in Charleston tomorrow!

But from my 5-minute invterval data downloaded from the console, the temp and dew point then was 96.2 and 80.6 and gives a heat index of 118.8.

Since I have been here, we have had a high temp of 96, dew points in the low to mid 70s, and the highest heat index being 109 here. To the west they reached 110!

Although it is hot here still (Last advisory read 92), a cold front that swept through the area a couple of days ago dropped dew points back to the upper 60s, making heat indeces around 100.

As of yesterday, this would tie for the 8th hottest summer on record for Charleston, WV, and we're still 10 degrees above average today.

The Highest Temp for Phoenix was 122F on Jun 26 1990.  I however didn't move here until the following July.  So I "Missed" it.  We did have a 121F in July 1995.

This year, we had 119F with around 7% humidity (what they call a Dry Heat) near the end of June.  Need to look it up.

We have had an unusually dry "Monsoon" this year.  Can't think of many days were it was really moist hot which would be typical during Most of July though the End of August.  As a result, it has been a fairly comfortable hot this summer, unlike what the mid-weat and now the east have been getting.

You're going by the airport numbers prior to your move tho', correct? How do your own overall summer numbers line up with theirs?

I remember my last summer in Vegas (2005) as being a record setter and every station on my side of town was consistently 5+ degrees higher than LAS.

Incredible.  Tulsa's record high ever was on Aug 10 1936 at 115ºF

Sofar my station has reported a high of 108.9ºF twice this year.

And Tulsa is on par for its hottest summer ever recorded.  Our current mean for this summer sofar is around 88.5.  Summer of 80 was 87.1.  We'll likely break it, as the weather heads are saying no relief in sight likely for at least three weeks.

Here's my July as of yesterday...

I remember the weathernets around town on the news that week - all the ones by me in the Ft Apache/Twain area were running 120s. Every one of them. It was brutal for sure. Even with the chilled air being aimed at my bed, I still had a floor fan running. I had already decided to move from Vegas prior to that but that pretty much cinched it entirely.

Now I'm nice and cool with only a 108 as a record high (station).

hot all week. Better than ice, snow and low wind chills.
The soil moisture reading in my garden was 42 at the 4 inch level and 41 at the 12 inch level...  I figured since there was no rain in the forecast, time to water the garden.

Peaches on the trees are small for this time of the year,  that rain in June didn't seem to help them in July.

Anyway...it is hot, humid and just nasty that way, but I'd rather have this than the cold

I have some other data that's not posted on the comparison and it's amazing how close all the numbers are.  If this were a blind test, no one would be able to decide which is the $100 unit & which is the $1000 unit.

I'm sure NE Oklahoma can beat that tomorrow.  We're possibly going to break the city alltime record of 115.  Today's official high at the airport was 112.  They're calling for 114, but that all depends on the timing of the front that's moving this way.  If we get the compressional heating that happens in advance, I'm guessing we'll get 116 or 117.  If not, it will likely be closer to 114.  My station registered 113.9 degrees today.  For another alltime station record.

1 8/09/2007 106ºF
2 8/10/2007 105ºF
3 8/22/2007 105ºF
4 8/15/2007 103ºF

6 8/04/2006 102ºF
7 8/17/2007 102ºF
8 8/21/2007 102ºF
9 7/23/2010 102ºF
10 8/2/2011 102ºF
Based on data from April 15, 2004 when National Weather Service began recording temperature in Lexington.
I don't know how Lexington kept on going without me.  Until I moved here, there was no official Lexington, Ga. temperature records.  Now the NWS Coop station (mine) records temperatures and rainfall.

100F here in Kennewick, WA... however this is very unusual. Most people think of Washington as wet and cool, but neglect the massive desert sitting just a few hours from Seattle. At the Pasco/Tri-Cities Airport the 'official' temperature has only hit 99F. The old record latest 100 degree day was July 20... but we 'officially' haven't hit 100F yet this year.

You set (and will surely hold) my personal record for the year when we passed through Vegas a couple of weeks ago.  108°F when we arrived and 111°F the following day (8/18) according to my RV-PWS.  We stayed at that place you suggested not far from you, so I can probably calibrate to your station.  The A/C couldn't keep the inside temp below 92°F, even though we stuffed pillows in the roof-vents and skylights while we were out.  We abandoned our plans to visit Death Valley the next day based on that performance, and began our final stages toward home the next morning.

Highest temp in Phoenix this year (so far) is 117° (my station recorded 116.6° on that day). Today makes 32 days at or above 110°. That ties the record, and we will probably beat it tomorrow. The excessive heat warning, which has already been extended a number of times, was extended again last night to this coming Friday. That makes it two weeks in length. This is now the hottest August on record for us.

Good grief, if global warming is true, then some soon upcoming summer the TV weathermen in Oklahoma City will end up excitedly telling us how many days the temp in OKC has gone over 110.  It has only done that 3 times this summer at my station.  Since rural OKC has a lot more vegetation around it than Phoenix, like cedars, scrub oaks, other assorted trees along with grass, persistent 110 plus degree weather would really turn up the fire threat.

I believe it's true, and responsible for a lot more than just the heat. Look at all the nonsense that's been going on lately - TX is burning up, earthquake and hurricane on the east coast within a week, another possible storm winding up in the Atlantic, we've got more fires burning again, volcano going nuts in Italy, half the nation is parched and half is flooded, etc. Ain't no fun no mo'...

Wonder how that temp happened?  I think we have all been outdone.

Today makes 32 days at or above 110°. That ties the record, and we will probably beat it tomorrow.

I thought last year's 18 days 100 or more was a lot for me - twice as many as any other year in my data. This year has 26 -that includes today.

If you listen in your mind, Al Gore sounds a lot like Forest Gump, and it all starts to make sense...

Quote from: Al Gore
One thin September soon
A floating continent disappears
In midnight sun

Vapors rise as
Fever settles on an acid sea
Neptune's bones dissolve

Snow glides from the mountain
Ice fathers floods for a season
A hard rain comes quickly

Then dirt is parched
Kindling is placed in the forest
For the lightning's celebration

Unknown creatures
Take their leave, unmourned
Horsemen ready their stirrups

Passion seeks heroes and friends
The bell of the city
On the hill is rung

The shepherd cries
The hour of choosing has arrived
Here are your tools

And that's all I've got to say about that.

The pic denotes the gust front.

Any final conclusions?

A) It was dang hot this year

B) Although we did not hit 100F, we hit the mid and upper 90s frequently with dew  points in the 70s

c) It was pretty dry during the summer for us

The unusual amount of rain this year has kept the temps lower all summer. The beginning of March we hit that one day and ever since it's been under that. Better than May of last year when we hit 108 (but still didn't complain then). :-P

Is it normally a dry or wet heat? I figured probably wet. Is where u live considered a tropical climate?

98F for us, but we had like 20 days that hit at least 95F
Title: Re: What's You Hottest Temperature this Year?

Yes, it's tropical climate year round. The hotter weather usually precedes our rainy/monsoon season so usually it's a little more of a dry heat. The norm is hotter and dry then rains with cooler temps., then cooler and dry. We're just now getting into the end of the rains and the arrival of cooler temps. (I hope the rains end, enough grass mowing this year ).

Only a few days over 80F at home.  Typical summer for the Puget Sound area.  Hottest (at my station) was 87F mid August, the day we returned from our round-the-country trip.  Hottest temp experienced this year was 111F in Las Vegas, near the end of the trip.

The warmest temperature this year was 27.4C (81F) on Sept 8th.  That is definitely cooler than normal.  We should have had a few days above 30C in a normal year, especially in July or August.

113 officially here on August 3rd, my station recorded 115.0 on that date as well for its all time record.

The summer mean for Tulsa was 87.6 degrees...making it the second hottest summer on record, only behind 88.0 degrees posted in 1980.

This was the most brutal summer I can ever remember.  I was 13 in 1980, and don't really remember it very well.  I'm not sad to see it go.

It seems that it was a hotter, drier summer in the southwest and up though the Texas panhandle and therabouts, while the Pacific Northwest had a cold spring and a cool-to-average summer, compared to the record temps we have had the last couple of summers.  I wonder how it averages out globally.

It's kind of fun for me to see the reports for high temps this summer from around north America.  We were in so many of those places, and I recorded the daily high and general conditions on each day.  Either from my RVWS if we were on the road, or the nearest WU station if we were stopped.  Joseph mentioned SD.  We spent a couple of days there in late July, and it was comfy for us.  Whatever the humidity, it is drier than the PNW, and MUCH drier (and cooler) than once we reached Ontario and the entire east coast, until we got back to the Albuquerque area.  Then it was just hotter than heck (but a dry heat) until we got home in mid-August.

You ought to make a new 2012 thread.

We had 82.4˚ today when our average is in the 50s. There were several records broken locally. 83˚ put us over the all-time record for any date in March.
