Got 1-Wire, tell me about it...
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:38:51 PM »
So, I'm curious about folks' 1-Wire setups.  I've done lots of searches here and on the Internet and found very, very little info about 1-Wire stuff.  Well, let me amend that.  I've found lots of info about the technical specs of 1-Wire and the protocols and such.  I've found a few folks using the $100 AAG 1-Wire Weather station too.  I'm more curious about folks that have setup 1-Wire stuff piece-meal/DIY.  Apparently Dallas Semi used to have forums, but they're gone and only accessible to people who have logins from before they were taken down.

So, if you have one of the commercial 1-Wire WS (AAG or the other one, can't remember the brand) or if you're using a bunch of 1-Wire sensors/hardware with a PC as a weather station, tell me about your system.  What's worked, what's not worked if you bought kit stuff like from hobby boards or if you bought chips and made your own or if you've sourced stuff from other vendors (Datanab seems to have a slew of temp senders).

I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible before I start buying gear, but most of the info seems to either be very low level stuff about the chips or theoretical stuff about what could be done with the hardware.  I'm surprised there's not more practical info from folks that are using it.  Info about what's worked and what didn't work, what software folks are using and what they're using it for.

Thanks

I was intrigued by 1-wire.  Got it, set it up, made it work, gave it away.
Go here for all the info you'll ever need:  www.weathertoys.net or buy the book "Weather Toys" by Tim Bitson.  A 1-wire forum: http://www.weathertoys.net/phpBB2/index.php
The site and forum is also linked to Hobby Boards which is a supplier of all the bits and pieces you'll ever need.
I tried using Java to interface, preferred to use the Basic Stamp 2 for interfacing to the Maxim I2C devices.
It's a good system.  I still use the parts, just not as a 1-wire system.
One quirk that I ran into was searching the 1-wire bus to get the serial number of the devices on the bus.  Each device has it's own unique serial number.  PM me for how I made that work.
Al Washington, Lexington, Ga.,  NWS Coop station=LXTG1, Fischer Porter, SRG, MMTS.
CoCoRaHS=GA-OG-1. CWOP=CW2074.  Davis VP2+ WLIP 5.9.2, VP(original) serial, VWS v15.00 p02. ImageSalsa, Win7 & Win8 all-in-one.

Thanks for the responses.  I'd seen the "weather toys" forums, and should have realized since the book is about 1-wire that the forums would be, but it didn't click.  I just knew there had to be some forums with more info, now I have 2.  Thanks again!

I found some links to a few interesting pages.

So here's some of what I've seen.

Good info here.

http://pond1.gladstonefamily.net:8080/surge-protection.html

I really liked this page.  Lots of pictures and info.

And this site has some good info

But it's a bit hard to follow the orange box full of links at the top.

I picked up "Weather Toys" tonight from the local Barnes and Noble.  I've got some reading to do.

Search for articles by "Dan Awtrey"  He's with Dalls Semi.  Lots of good stuff from him.

Some of his articles are here:  http://1wire.org/  Along with lots of other  good stuff.  One wire is pretty neat and easy to use.

Yes, based on my reading, 1-Wire is really cool.  Simplicity and flexibility limited by nearly nothing but your imagination.

I've actually got some ideas for having the system touch my HVAC controls as well.

Wow that is neat,  That guy has some skills.  I wish my kodak picture frame had some wifi or ethernet, then I could do the same by storing a picture from VWS.

You can buy a WiFI digital pic frame for well under a hundred bucks now.  Hmmm... another weather toy to buy.  The CFO ought to be real impressed.  Not.

ANd yeah, that guy's done some neat stuff.

The picture frame is a cool idea. He said he is using an RSS feed through a custom script. I would like to just stream my graphs from the weather computer. Hmmm something to think about.............
