Title: Emergency Manager looking for suggestions for a weather station
Post by: SEMA on February 01, 2018, 04:58:36 PM
There are numerous vendors and stations out there. I am looking for recommendations of a weather station that can be monitored remotely via the web. It would be good to have lightning detection too. I am also interested in hooking a webcam up for monitoring from my EOC. Any suggestions for weather stations, detectors and camera systems? I need to be responsible too with tax payer money so reasonable pricing is good but I am willing to spend for a reliable good system. I thank you in advance for any suggestions or links to information.

Pricey, but many municipalities rely on these guys. http://www.youngusa.com/
If that's outta your budget, there's the good ole Davis VP2.

The emergency building here has a Davis. It is mounted poorly, with everything way up on a tower however.

Not sure about webcam or lightning detection but these may be of interest. https://dyacon.com/product-category/weather-stations/

Some states have a METAR program that may be operated by a University.  If so, and they don't already have a station in your area, they may be willing to place one at their expense.  If so, that would be a great deal more accurate than any retail product.

METAR data is accurate? I find most very unreliable.

I absolutely do not disagree, as I could extrapolate ad naseum, but I find it depends on what obs your viewing. This of course should not be the case.

Rainwise makes a good product too.  They have both consumer and commercial weather products.

Quality lightning detectors are budget busters if accuracy is high on the priority list. Suggest you first contact Earth Networks to see if you can tie into their network, depending upon where this station will be located. The company provides lightning alerts for municipalities, schools, universities, outdoor stadiums, etc.

As far as the standard wx equipment, you didn't mention whether this needs to be a turnkey system or if you have (or have access to) the mechanical and programming skills to put together a top-notch system of commercial-grade sensors.

Several county EMA's near me use a Davis VP2 (https://www.davisnet.com/solution/vantage-pro2/). Although, the display from the console and Weatherlink software are dated, the equipment is accurate and durable. If you get the WeatherlinkIP datalogger as well you can easily make your data viewable on the web. For web cams the choice is more challenging. Stardot cameras are rock solid (my experience) but pricey unless you can wait until next Black Friday sales. Others can provide their input but I also like Sharx, and Axis brand cameras. Best of luck.
