Funny, but I did this professionally for several years taking observations in parallel with AWOS/ASOS when they were first getting certified and I would not want one. Maybe they are better now (I would hope so), but back then...
Considering the umteen million passengers that fly in this country ever year, I'd surely hope so too.

As for the 5 to 10x rain readings, that sounds like hyperbole to me.

If you're going to trash other brands of gear, you should at least have some real knowledge of what's going on in that realm.

It doesn't rain often here, so when it does the gauge had better get it right.  So here you go for the last rainfall here:
My VP2: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KNVRENO37#history/s20151001/e20151001/mdaily
~one mile away to SE acurite: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KNVRENO140#history/s20151001/e20151001/mdaily
~one mile away to NE TI station: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KNVRENO177#history/s20151001/e20151001/mdaily
~one mile away to S ? station: http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KNVRENO87#history/s20151001/e20151001/mdaily

The ratio of the acurite's rainfall to the average of three stations is 5.48!  No hyperbole.

Once again I form my opinions of other station's quality by their deviations from VP2 and Rainwise station's readings.

People always talk about the weather, but they never do anything about it.  Not me.  I'm gonna measure it.  https://www.tceweather.com
