New Website
« on: January 12, 2015, 09:51:53 PM »
Hi all!

I run a weather observations website, weatherobs.com, and thought you may like to know that I have just added data from the CWOP network via the madis servers.  The CWOP observations now sit alongside METAR, SYNOP, SHIP and BUOY obvervations from around the world.

Please take a look and let me know what you think.  It is obviously not as swish as Weather Underground's wundermap, but I'd like to think it offers something a bit different.

cheers
Dan

Dan,

Welcome to the forum.
Thanks for sharing your site and at a glance it all looks interesting.
A small constructive criticism I can offer... Your site color is a bit harsh on my eyes. But I can see why the choice on the colors... I am sure it has to do with the map overlays and what not..
Will report feedback as much as I can.
Thanks and thank you for your contribution to the wx community! :D

Edit:

WoW! I really like the data you provide via individual station.
Works well so far. Good job!

That looks very nice. 1 question, down along the left side just under the Aviation section there's site names with numbers to their right. What are those numbers?

edit: Welcome to the forum btw!

Looks like they are the highest values (shown within your current zoom level) for your chosen parameter, which seems to be wind speed by default. When I zoomed in on my location it listed the nearby airport as "10" and my location as "8", which were the two highest values on the screen.

Thanks for the feedback
Yes the box in the bottom left corner is the "top ten" panel ( or bottom ten if you click the little arrow to sort in the other direction). It shows the 10 highest or lowest values in the current view for whatever variable you have displayed at that time.
Noted on the white on black color scheme...I initially chose these colors it as I found it easier on the eye when reading long lists of text reports on forecasting night shifts - but not all eyes seem to agree so i think I'll change the look a bit on my next major release later in the year.

How about a "data refresh" option for your next release? :D

Dan,

Great job on your site.  =D>

Two comments:
  • Can the pages be zoomed-in/out? If so, I can't seem to find a way to do that.
  • There are weather buoys on Lake Tahoe. The link to them is: http://remote.ucdavis.edu/tahoe_location.asp. You might want to consider adding them to your site.

Thanks for the further feedback guys
-W3DRM. Yes you can zoom in and out using your mouse wheel, or double clicking the left or right mouse buttons. There is also the google maps zoom button left centre, but this may be hiding under the marker drop menu depending on your screen size.  Thanks for the buoy link - i'll take a look.

-xcom - Good idea regarding the refresh button - this can be added easily. The page will re-load if you move away to another tab or program, then come back - but not if you just leave it on the screen. I could also add an automatic data re-load every 5-10 minuts.

I just noticed the grey dots indicating stations without current data. Nice feature!

Yes the grey circles either mean that the data for that site is older than 3 hours, or that there is no information for the chosen marker type - eg if pressure is chosen for the marker, but the station in question does not record pressure.

You said you added CWOP stations but I don't think they are showing up. I live in western North Carolina and there are dozens of CWOP stations around the area. Your map only shows the main airport, and I have your settings to show 1000 stations. Bug fix?

I see them in Northern Michigan including my own station. I also see them in western NC. Do you have the "Show CWOP data" set to "Yes" under the Preferences (under "Units")? It is the last item on the list. Click on the "gear" at the upper right.

I took a screenshot here. I don't see any place to turn on CWOP.

Re: New Website :: CWOP missing
« Reply #23 on: January 29, 2015, 11:01:18 AM »
It seems that a lot of the CWOP stations have gone missing from weatherobs.com, including my own.

There are some that show, but in the Great Lakes area (MI, WI, IN) a lot just show the gray dot.

There is some data when I click on the dot.

CWOP, MADIS https://madis-data.noaa.gov/sfc_display/, MesoWest http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/mesomap.cgi?state=MI&rawsflag=3 all show my own station (C/CW4114) OK.

Anyone else seeing this issue?
