End of Service for the Weather Underground API
« on: September 10, 2018, 03:48:59 PM »
At last some information....

https://apicommunity.wunderground.com/weatherapi/topics/end-of-service-for-the-weather-underground-api

Don't count on WU doing the right thing for Owners of Personal Weather Stations.

I am hopeful, and give them the benefit of doubt.

After reading these two bullet points can someone elaborate how this affects us personal weather station owners? Because it seems like it won't affect us. Seems like the good news is that WU is going to become faster after they kick off the commercial WU API users. Those commercial services are the ones that need to worry it seems, not us.

Quote
* If you are a Personal Weather Station owner, you will receive more information about our plan to offer free access to the data you provide to Weather Underground. We’ll reach out once that plan has been finalized.

* For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API. Stay tuned for more details as we build this out.

Ditto.

From the interactions I've had recently, they certainly seem to be trying to do the right things, and they are making progress.

A couple things to think about

1) We will likely be changing the format of the API slightly.  This will impact owners if you use third party libraries to get your data
2) Some of the features won't continue to be available, especially initially.   We'll have a list of features we plan to persist and some documentation soon.  We'll listen to your feedback and do the best we can to serve your needs.

I want to thank those of you who stick with us and continue to support Weather Underground.  I know we do some things that seem maddening, and seem like they are ruining the product you love.  Rest assured many of us are working to make things better and while some things get worse on occasion, they are all in service of supportability and sustainability.  Without these changes, many features of WU would already be dead.

Is http://api.wunderground.com/api/ down today, or has it been killed off?

I have been using it to get Record and Normal Highs for my PWS site.

Not quite dead... according to https://apicommunity.wunderground.com/weatherapi/topics/end-of-service-for-the-weather-underground-api the service should be up until 12/31/2018.  Sometime before, they should announce what the plans are for PWS owners replacement API.  Meanwhile, we wait...

Yeah, I saw that.  I'm guessing the issues I'm seeing are due to some other outage.

Would be nice to see what they claim they are going to be offering to the PWS people.  Maybe not the code, but at least an idea of what we could expect.  Like I said, all I really want are Normal/Record high/lows.  If they aren't going to do that, I'd at least like to start work on a different method of getting those on my site.

I at least thought I would post that the is API is down for now.

I just checked and the API is back up and working.  I guess normal WU issues.

I am working on a simple solution of my own.  But it is tedious.  Previously, I figured out how to make PHP fetch a file based on today's date.  That's how I'm getting my normal rain for the month and YTD rain from within ajax-dashboard.php.  That solution has 24 files, 2 per a month.  One file for normal rain this month, and one for YTD.  The PHP just returns the value within the txt file that is fetched based on this month.

I can take the same approach for normal high and normal low for today.  I found a site where I can pick the month and it'll report the normals for each day for Bismarck.  I then have to create 365x2 files with that data.  Unless global warming takes over, my data should remain the same.  So I'm in the process of doing that.

I have https://www.bismarckweather.net/ajax-dashboard3.php working.  I only have October files there, but it is pulling the right data.

Here is the site where I'm getting my normals should anyone else be interested.
