Davis VP 2 Anemometer problem
« on: March 03, 2018, 10:59:46 PM »
Been noticing my VP2's wind cups dont seem to move in light wind.

Any fix? Or I will put an oil? And what kind of oil?

Thanks

My VP 2 is 1 year and 6 months old

you should have the cartridge type, which is easy to replace that part
do you live close to the ocean?

My anemometer starting malfunctioning.  It's start spinning but abruptly stop at times.  I tried cleaning with a spray contact cleaner which "seemed" to help for a while.  I finally ordered a new cartridge and it has worked great ever since then.

Living in a coastal area you will possibly be more prone to corrosion.  The new cartridge is completely sealed and I believe will be longer-lived than the original.

Here's the part that I ordered for mine...it's an easy fix, but you do need the correct size allen/hex wrench.  Hopefully you still have the OE wrench that came with the VP2 but if you don't you can buy a small set of wrenches cheaply.  Just get the correct size so the screw doesn't get buggered up.

Hard to tell from your pic. Look at the link at in the swamps's post. There is a graphic on which cartridge you need. One for a straight body or an hour glass shape. Determine which one you have and contact Scientific Sales.

there are lots of threads on the cartridge type and how to replace that
(you just need a very small allen key and a phillips screw driver)

I would say that the cartridge that I linked to previously is compatible with your anemometer.  The last picture of the anemometer actually cuts off the part we need to see, but looking at the rest of it I'm pretty confident this is the correct part.

Looks like the hour glass cartridge but the bottom of your pic is cut off.

From the images that would appear the current version and compatible with this new replacement cartridge.

I understand you wanting to be sure that this is the correct part being as you appear to be in the Phillipines and don't want a problem getting a wrong part.  If you order from Ryan at the link I posted you can rest assured that he'll take care of you...he is a very good guy.

From the last pictures that you posted I will say that the link I posted is to the correct part for your anemometer.  The replacement is easy.  Remove the allen screw that holds on the windcup assembly using the allen wrench.  Remove the phillips (X) screw holding the old cartridge in place.  Gently remove the old anemometer... you might have to wiggle it a bit.  Slip the new anemometer back in.  It should be a good fit.  No excessive force is necessary.  Replace the screw to hold the anemometer cartridge in its place.  Attach the cups with the allen screw.

I will say that the link I posted is 99% the correct one for your application.  :)

I think they're $16.50 at Scaled Instruments, plus shipping of course.  Best wishes on the repair.  Mine worked out great. :)
