Heat index seems high 5 in 1
« on: June 01, 2019, 10:34:30 AM »
I live in Southwest Florida where it is brutally hot right now. I noticed the last few days the heat index (feels like temp) is very high. According to my 5 in 1 we hit about 95 degrees F yesterday with the top heat index of 109... That seems absurd.
Currently at 1031 hours, the temp is reading 93 heat index of 103. I checked to make sure the internal fan is spinning which it sounds like it is as I can hear the hum from inside.
I'm reading weather stations that are within a mile or 2 of me and they read 87 feels like 97.

What do you think? Is something out of wack?

Heat index is a computed value from the measured values of temperature and relative humidity.

Does the relative humidity seem reasonable, or is it pegged to a 100% or so?

Humidity is currently at 69% which is pretty low for this area, but it's spot on with all other weather reports.

Then the only other possibility is that the temperature is off.

If it seems high, yet the fan is running, you might check the "wind tunnel" to make sure it isn't blocked by nesting insects.

The fan must be operating correctly or everything is wrong. Even if the fan is running, it may not be running as fast as it needs to be.

At 93F and 69%, that puts your dew point at 82F, which is about 10F too high compared to ASOS's in the SW part of the state. Also, 93F and 69% puts the HI at 115-116F, not 103F, so something is amiss somewhere. It may be time for a new sensor, especially if your fan is working as should.

I was given a new sensor by Acurite a while back.. I'll try that one.
The only other thing that I can think for false readings would be heat from the roof. The sensor is about 3-4 feet from the side of the roof and about 3f above it, but not directly above it.

Certainly possible, but the problem is that will elevate the temp, not the dew. If anything the higher temp will correlate to a lower RH, which obviously means a lower dew, not higher like your's.

The heat index looks right for the temp and relative humidity shown.

That's much more reasonable than the 82F from earlier, and a huge difference at those temps.
