Severe Weather Alerts While Traveling
« on: April 09, 2012, 09:55:21 PM »
In the past 6 months I have been traveling during severe weather, IE (Torndoes / Sever thunderstorm warnings) Not by my choice of course. I'd rather stay at home instead of on the road. For now I have my wife looking at the weather and keeping me informed but she has a hard time seeing where I'm at in relation to the actual storms. I also use my smart phone to pull up the radar but several times I'm in an area with no signal.  Any suggestions on how I can track this in my vehicle to try and avoid these storms other than staying home? In Mississippi there is only one radio station that will broadcast NOAA alerts over the air that I know of..

I suggest using a portable NOAA Weather Radio.  There are a few threads in this forum discussing the merits
and shortcomings of different models.  More info can also be found here:  http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/index.html

Thanks for the reply. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it earlier but I went online was looking at Apps and I got the App PYKL3 Radar for my Android. It's suppose to have an radar overlay at your position. I'll just have to make sure I have signal for phone. I hope it works as advertised.

You may want to check out the iMAP Weather app for Android, too.

As a backup to your smart phone the Midland HH54VP2 may be a good choice since it has a travel mode - always nice to have more than one method of receiving warnings.

I use PYKL3 and I do like it.  I also have Radarscope.  I loved Radarscope for my itouch but not so much for Android. I've never used either for traveling though.  Both will still leave you at the mercy of cell signal and spotty mobile internet.

for my android  I use  Radar Now!  and  Rain Alarm Pro.    Then I have from Weatherunderground to send me weather alerts via text messages where I am going into.
