Interesting Feature on Radar in the Gulf of Maine
« on: December 29, 2017, 03:36:31 PM »
We've been brutally cold over the past few days (-22.2F was our low temp this morning), and it is currently 1.8F. Light snow is also falling at the moment, and a fellow weather observer of mine noticed this unique feature on the radar just off the coast of Maine.

Any ideas? To me it looks like some kind of low pressure or center of lower pressure trying to form. Use the link below to view the loop radar image, or view the image attached. It's the curly-q feature forming in the Gulf of Maine.

My money's on an MCV, and a well developed one at that.

I think you’re right! It’s really a very neat feature to see!

During monsoon season, we get them all the time. About the only way to see them is on radar or visible satellite only, WV and IR they don't usually show up.

I won’t lie I’d never even heard of an MCV until now , but a quick google search brought up a great description, and I can honestly say it seems to match the radar image I was seeing pretty well!

And now I can say I learned something new today! Thanks CW2274!

Anytime. Learning new stuff is fun. When these get going during monsoon here (can be several in just the southern half of the state alone) they can really enhance rain fall, and aid in severe development. They're literally just a little surface low that's developed from thunderstorm complexes, i.e MCS's.

Those happen sometimes over Lake Ontario also. With the very cold surface temps and "warm" lake temps.
