Powered or unpowered USB hub
« on: July 05, 2017, 02:34:37 AM »
What is recommended USB hub to connect a Vantage Pro to Meteobridge?
A powered or unpowered. Any particular brand or model?
The unpowered one I use may not work properly.

The one that I have been using for over a year is 'ONN Travel Hub'. It is a un-powered USB 2.0 with 4 ports. It was about $10 USD at the local Walmart. One port is connected to Davis console and 1 port has a SanDisk 8GB USB stick that I use to boot the Meteobridge. It is 8 GB because that is all I had at the time - I used it to transfer files between machines.

There was about 2 GB of data on it but I just attached to hub and set the MB to "Version : Try USB 1st".

This https://www.startech.com/ca/Cards-Adapters/USB-2/Hub/4-Port-Notebook-Sized-Mini-USB-20-Hub~ST4200MINI has worked flawlessly for me.  About 14 USD but they can be had for less.

Powered or unpowered is really more about the devices you are going to plug into the USB ports...

The USB port supports providing 5 volts to the devices you want to connect, but the current is limited by the capacity of the source (motherboard or other).  A powered hub is required when you either have high-current devices such as hard drives and CD drives OR a large enough quantity of USB devices that would exceed the current limits.

Since the Meteohub and Davis are both powered by their own supplies, an unpowered hub should be fine if all you need to add is a thumbdrive or two...

Thanks for the help.
I was not aware you could boot from the USB drive. Will look into that.
The ST4200MINI is available here so I will get one of those. My Meteobridge has worked great for 2 years but for the last 2 months has been disconnecting far too often. A new hub is my last resort.
