Mmmmm.... workstation p0rn !

Here's the thing with the imbedded graphics vs. peripheral graphics cards: With imbedded graphics, your main processor has to do most of the heavy lifting to process what you see on the screen in addition to the other processing requests from the system. Does it slow down the processing ? Probably, but you most likely won't realize it until you start doing some heavy crunching that taxes your i5. Video\photo rendering could do that, but I can't say (my PC is for work).

Personally, I like to have my PC's processor dedicated to the system requests, so bought a mid-range video card (ATI 5770) to do the dedicated video.

The embedded graphics works good for what I do for now. BTW is that ATI card good?

My ATI card was considered mid-grade when I bought it ~2 years ago. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would pony up the extra $$ for a higher-end card. Even on a PC used primarily for crunching numbers, writing docs, and sending\receiving email, I find there are gliches in my display that are likely caused by limitations of the graphics card. Note, however, that I run dual displays (once you go dual, you will never go back !).

BTW, it's really a toss-up on the graphics processors when you are talking ATI vs. Nvidia. They both make good video, it's just that when I bought my card, there really weren't any decent mid-range Nvidia cards on the market.

Yours looks so clean, which reminded me to open mine and get the dogs and cat hair out of them.

Lol. Take a picture of your PC.

I'd be embarrassed. Got 4 dogs and 2 cats running around lol

If the fans concern you, you could always go H2O.  I see they have cooler blocks for vid cards nowadays.

I've long considered H2O, but that introduces other issues.

Nice job with the wiring. Well I broke down and ordered the Gigabyte 430 GPU for $69 off newegg. It will suit my needs just fine and cheap!

SATA makes that pretty easy, it was a disaster back when everything was IDE and SCSI and I had to use a slew of power Y's.

I think you'll be happy with the Gigabyte, it'll make it much less likely that you'll run into a program that can't be run.

Do I have to turn onboard graphics off before I install the GPU or will it recognize it?

Maybe.

If you don't see the POST with no BIOS changes, reattach your monitor to the onboard GPU and then change the BIOS.

You would think when I put the dvi cable from monitor in video card it would disable the onboard dvi port.

Nope. Actually, you can use the on board for a second monitor.

It depends on what options the BIOS offers. In some cases you can set the default graphics adapter. If there is not such an option, then you may have to disable the onboard graphics to see the POST process. If there is, but you are certain you'll never want to use the onboard graphics, then you may want to disable it.

I think the 'Auto' that the Gigabyte board defaults to should handle it either way. My UD5H defaults to auto - don't know if yours does.

So don't go into BIOS and disable? Just connect DVI to video card and I'm good to go?

Correct. If I'm not mistaken, your video card will probably be a PCI-E card. You can go into your BIOS now to see whether the PCI-E slot(s) are enabled, but I'm willing to bet that they are (i.e. set to Auto as Pat mentioned). Just plug in your card, move the DVI cable to it, and power on. You'll initially get just the basic VGA screen until Windows installs the correct drivers (or you install them),  but you are probably familiar with that process.

Now comes the fun part: if you have another monitor and cable, you can do as C5250 mentions and connect them up to the on-board video interface. Nothing beats having dual monitors. If not, then you *could* go into the BIOS and disable the on-board video to keep the CPU from crunching any instructions that may be destined for that interface. Knowing all the software and Windows, even if nothing is connected to those interfaces I'd be willing to bet that instructions processed by the CPU and sent to them. But that's just what my anal-retentive, geek-ness, would do...

The onboard graphics in the BIOS is set to auto so I should be ok?

Probably. Worst case, install the card, connect the display and see if anything appears. If not you have to go in to the BIOS.

This is what the MB manual for my C2SBC-Q (Phoenix BIOS) says:
Code: [Select]
Default Primary Video Adapter
This feature allows the user to select the video device used by the BIOS during
POST.  If  set  to  Auto,  PEG,  PCI,  and  IGD  (Internal  Graphics  Device)  devices
will be selected. If set to IGD (Internal Graphics Device), IGD and PCI devices
will be selected. If set to PEG, PEG and PCI devices will be selected. If set to
PCI, PCI, PEG and IGD devices will be selected.

What that means, when set to Auto, the BIOS search order is PCI-E, PCI and then the integrated. And which ever it finds first becomes the default adapter.

I agree with both of you and for what I'm doing now its not needed so I will wait. I have also heard about the fans going out over time.  Could you two post pics of your PC's as I would be interested seeing it.

I put a few pics here:
