Just checked my parents forecast down in central Fla. because their e-mails have complaints of the cold down there.
Forecast for Orange

Updated: 3:48 PM EST on January 5, 2010
Freeze warning in effect from 11 PM this evening to 9 am EST Wednesday...
Wind chill warning in effect from 11 PM this evening to 9 am EST Wednesday...
Freeze watch in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning...

John, you have room for 2 visitors up your way?  ;) Sounds a little better up in S/E Alaska then down in central Fla.

The 16 we had for a high here today felt downright balmy.  We are supposed to get all the way to 20 tomorrow and we might stay above 0 tonight.  However tomorrows "warmth" will be accompanied by this.

"* SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA BETWEEN 9 AM AND NOON
WEDNESDAY...BEFORE TAPERING TO FLURRIES AFTER MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY
NIGHT. TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE FROM 3 TO 5 INCHES BEFORE
TAPERING OFF TO FLURRIES AFTER MIDNIGHT.

* AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP THROUGH THE REGION WEDNESDAY
NIGHT...WITH WINDS INCREASING TO BETWEEN 20 AND 25 MPH WITH GUSTS
UP TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE BY THURSDAY MORNING. THIS WILL CREATE
SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW WITH NEAR BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS POSSIBLE AT TIMES. VISIBILITIES WILL BE REDUCED TO BELOW
ONE HALF MILE WITH ROADS BECOMING NEAR IMPASSIBLE...ESPECIALLY OVER
RURAL AND OPEN AREAS.

* DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS WILL OVERSPREAD THE REGION THURSDAY AS
TEMPERATURES FALL THROUGH THE SINGLE DIGITS. WIND CHILL VALUES OF
15 TO 25 BELOW ZERO WILL BECOME WIDESPREAD... CREATING A
POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION FOR ANYONE CAUGHT OUTDOORS
AND UNPROTECTED FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES."

So says the NWS.  We still have 7 or 8 inches of snow on the ground and drifts several feet deep from the Christmas blizzard.

That's true, they quite often totally miss the snow totals.  However, I bet they are right on the temps and the wind.  We have a couple inches of light powdery snow sitting around from this weekend.  Even if we get no snow from this storm we'll still have some to blow around when the front passes.

I am watching the Orange Bowl..  GO HAWKEYES!!!!

Said it was the coldest Orange Bowl ever.

around 42. It was 4 in Iowa City.

Good for Iowa.

Supposed to dip under zero again this week and have some -25-30 degree wind chills.

My school district will probably not close.  We can move busses pretty good.

Out state schools may close.  Don't want the kids to be on a diesel bus if it gells up.
Many are using diesel with soy.  It gells a little faster that regular diesel-even with 20% kerosene.

Our weather broadcasters say that is common.

The jet stream bows down into the lower 48 and allows it to be near or above Alaska.
Especially after a big storm. (been cold since Christmas)

Next week it is supposed to change.

can anyone back me up on this?

we are supposed to get a pile of snow on top of this mess, then back into the deep freeze.   nasty the rest of the week, but heck going to school at -10 or lower seems to the trend.

The snow this time is to be that light fluffy stuff, the strong NW winds,   the open areas are going to take it in the tush.

Yup... Go Hawkeyes....

Sure, I'll back you up!   But no, it's not uncommon.

I'm sitting here watching the Orange Bowl and it's 48 degrees, the coldest Orange bowl ever out of 74 years.

It's winter in Iowa
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Iowa
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Iowa
I'm frozen to the friggin' ground!

When I was little and talking about the cold with my parents I used to say it was "cold as a witch's brass monkey"  to keep it clean (and to keep from getting the crap slapped out of me).

Well here in Norway they are expecting several temperturerecords today when it comes to cold weather.

The first thing they mention on the news this morning was the cold weather, it's measured -41C!!!! tonight in Røros, (it's in mid. Norway). And we are expecting it cold or colder for some  days now.

Not far from here it's an official/national weather station (in my birth town Saltdal 30km from here), and there it was record yesterday with -32,2C, the man who manage it has done it for 28 years and never had it so cold in that period.

So, it's freezing f...... cold here!!  ;)

Edit: BTW when i use a converter on the web it shows that -41C is -41,8F!!

When it comes to the witch. I've never heard anyone mention the monkey.

Now back to the weather. We've probably gotten atleast 8 inches of snow since Monday afternoon. Maybe even 10.  Temps did hit 20 early yesterday afternoon. Only got down to 16 last night. So may make it to the low 20's today. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks,
Anthony

Well the NW wind seems to not want to show its face over here.
all the heavy snow has been just 8 miles west of me for a while. the areas that dont get the lake effect as much are getting it this year.
NWS Marquette has picked up about 90 inches this year to my 65 :-x
Oh well maybe it will change soon. Atleast the cloud cover is keeping us warm.
It's been almost 2 weeks since the sun has been in full force around here

In Oklahoma a number of schools are closing Thursday and Friday due to the unusually cold weather that is just now beginning to plunge temps below freezing, including the biggest school districts, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Temps to be near zero Friday morning.

I just can't believe they are closing schools with that for an reason. There are kids all around this country in cluding canada and alaska that GOES to school under those conditions.
Really seem to me like some one high up wants some time off.
