Geeze Louise! It's cold!
« on: January 02, 2010, 10:27:06 AM »
I know you folks up north think we're weenies down here (and you may be right) but 19 F with 13 mph wind is cold!  It was spitting snow briefly here for a while, but there's blue skies now.  I have a fire going just in case there's a power failure (and we're going to bake some taters and maybe some corn a little later).

Good morning all.  I can never resist when someone talks about the cold.

We have been at sub zero for over 24 hours.  No biggie.

clear skies+cold north air+ lots of snow on the ground= cold!!!

Low of -15.8°F at 7:58 this morning which proves it is always darkest before the dawn.

Right now wind chills are around -17F

I worked the Minnesota Timberwolves game last night.  There were a few from Florida talking about the cold.
I had to explain to them that -5 wasn't that bad.

this just makes us appreciate 20 degree days. And it is too cold to snow!!

predicted high of -3 today!!!

A Public Service Announcement

If you have pets outside, ensure they have water (not ice).  Feed them often so they can stay warm.

If you have senior neighbors, check on them.  They might have the heat turned down or off to save money on their utility bills.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum postings.

Yeah, I work with a guy the grew up in Minneapolis.  He says the seasons there are Winter, Still Winter, and construction.

I showed him the thing you did recently about Minnesota winters, and he said, "Yep, you betcha!"

If this cold weather is exceptional for your location, you might consider opening cupboard doors adjacent to water faucets and leaving them with a trickle of water on overnight to prevent freeze ups.  Especially if you have turned down residence heat to save the heating bill. This might seem a waster of water, but it beats trying to find an available plumber the next day.

We set a record low this morning of -6.2.   That's the coldest it's been since we moved to our current house in March of 06.  As of noon we've warmed all the way up to 3.

We left Toronto a couple of hours ago to come home and had a great drive IN SUNSHINE until 10 miles from home and hit the lake effect show.  Traffic backed up, white-outs and very dangerous, got off the main highway to home - couldn't get in the driveway and hopped through 36" of accumulation to get to the garage and snowblower, what a shock.. but pretty, and also not severe cold.  The most snow in a very short while that I can recall - blower was tunneling underneath.  Driveway and porch now accessible and after a hot bowl of soup feeling good.

Always glad to help when I can.  I have to deal with a dog and did have to deal with my late mother in law so it's kind of fresh on my mind.  I fed and watered the dog this morning and I just came in and the water was already frozen (6 hours).  Wow!

On the other hand, I just saw a great big red fox walking through the woods behind the house.  I never have a camera when I need one!  I know it had it's fur fluffed out to keep warm, but this thing was as big as my dog.

Well, I was going to tell you about how cold it's supposed to be in my neck of the woods the next 5 days but you blew that plan right out of the water.
I'll just put my tail between my legs and get on home. :-(

I can relate to that... the low last night was -20F.  It is about -5.8 right now.    From the extended forecast.. single digits next week all the way to Friday, lows below zero.  I am also amazed at the humidity.  it is still up there.  I am going to have a real power bill this month.   The snow layer doesn't really help much, it is keeping the ground from freezing, but still.  I am not planning to dig a hole... the satellite dish folks don't mind it as well as the grave diggers.  Hmmmmmm

I see from the Jet stream charts, this cold is going to head way south of Missouri

Is a bit fo a cold snap.  Friday aft it was around -1C, -12 by last dog walk, woke up saturday to -19 and windy. Today woke up to blowing snow.  Looks like lake effect all the way from Georgian Bay (90 miles away).

currently -13 with 35k wind, gusting to 50.
Coldest windchill today -28.1c, coldest temp -16.8c

only .2mm melted in gauge, so its working, but i think the sideways snow is playing havoc with it.  0 to 6cms on ground from today's snow.

Andrew

ps: got new windows right before xmas.  not a whistle today with all the wind, and very little condensation even though indoor humidity is 35-40% and so cold out.  good for my webcams.... course my heating payback is probably 10 years + or so, but they look and work way better than the 20? year old ones I acquired with the house.  prior to my draftstop caulking in november each winter (only here 2 years) I could see outside and hear bird chirping like they were in the room on several of them.  Between energy audit, and our equivalent of stimulus rebate saved $4k.
