trying to delete Information on weatherlink to sell
« on: October 10, 2014, 09:18:53 AM »
Hi ,

I don't have broadband Internet at my house so I only have Internet through my smart phone.

I'd like to sell it on ebay or here but wanted to erase everything, not sure if it's easy to do or not?

Thanks

If I understand your question, you have a WLIP that you want to sell (at least) and you want to know about settings and data.

As far as I know, the data would be in your hard drive under C:\Weatherlink. If you delete everything there your data, settings, etc. will be gone.

However, any data already uploaded to Davis via WLIP (and consequently CWOP/WU) is probably "permanent" on the various databases.

I don't think that anything that would would sell associated with the WLIP (or rest of the station) would be a problem. Unless you put some custom IP addresses into the WLIP settings that you want to protect, I wouldn't worry about it. If there is something stored, you could use the web interface for the WLIP and set it back to DHCP. If you are going to sell it, you probably want it on DHCP anyways so that you won't get questions about the address from the buyer.

Could you be a bit more specific as to what you have?

If you do have a WeatherLinkIP as miraculon assumed, has it ever been used?  Have you ever set up your WeatherLinkIP account and uploaded weather data to that site?

Has it ever been connected to a Davis console? (Vue or VP2)?

Exactly what do you mean by erase everything?

It was installed on a vp2 and I don't have the computer it was installed on anymore. I may need to install it on my new computer in order to change back to dhcp ?

It's a weatherlink ip   I'd rather just sell it as is but not sure if I can, I want it use able for the next guy

One more time:

... has it ever been used?  Have you ever set up your WeatherLinkIP account and uploaded weather data to that site?
...

Exactly what do you mean by erase everything?

In other words - do you care if somebody else can see your data?  The associated account information on WeatherLink.com?

If you never specifically set an IP address, it is most likely still DHCP.
Do you have a router that you can find out what the IP address is?
If you can determine the IP address (the Weatherlink PC software program can tell you also) what does the web page look like when you enter the IP address in the browser (Firefox or IE)?

See attached image for mine. I smudged out my MAC address. If your top "button" that says Obtain an IP Address Automatically. you are OK. If there are IP addresses filled out like mine, then check the Obtain an IP Address Automatically. button.

Other than that, as dalecoy indicated, your data that you uploaded will remain on the Weatherlink site. (and CWOP/WU if you had it uploading there as well).

Depending on what upweather might choose to reveal to us, his/her WeatherLink.com account ID, password, and the Device ID and Key for the WLIP, may be an issue (assuming he/she sells the WLIP).

And, of course, there's the archived data that is (probably?) stored in the WLIP itself, if that is a part of the meaning of "erase everything".

Ihave no personal stuff that I'm trying to hideI just want to make it work sellable and the next buyer won't have any issues with my prior information from my weather station stored on the weather link IP

OK, that's cool.  Now, I'll ask this for the third time:

Have you ever set up your WeatherLinkIP account and uploaded weather data to that site?

[Added footnote: I presume your station ID is not WeatherMAX?]

Sorry to be snippy, but I get really really really tired of asking the same question and getting no answer.

So, I'll ask one other question:

If you have set up your WeatherLink.com account and have the username and password, then that account is uniquely attached to the Device ID and Key that are (supposed to be) attached to the side of the WeatherLinkIP device.  Question:  Are you intending to tell the buyer that information?

Being curious, I sent email to Davis on October 17th:

Quote
Subject: WeatherLinkIP

If I purchased a WeatherLinkIP from someone else - and they had already registered it with WeatherLink.com .....

Is there a procedure for transferring the WeatherLinkIP ownership to me, deactivating the previous registration, and allowing a new owner to register the device from a new location, etc.?

...and 12 days later, received a reply:

Yes,  what is the DID and key on your datalogger?

Or

Do you have contact with them?  Can you ask for their username and password then log in and change the settings to whatever you prefer?

So, apparently the WeatherLinkIp is "transferrable" to someone else.
