Installing meteohub under esxi
« on: July 01, 2014, 09:31:46 AM »
Hi

Just discovered meteohub and it looks great.
Is there an easy way to install this under esxi so I can try it out first?

I can see people are doing it, but no instructions.
My version of vsphere won't deploy the vmplayer images on the site download section...

I have a esxi 5.5 home automation server running a few vm's already so don't want to buy a separate bit of hardware to run this.

Cheers!

Assuming you have already tried http://wiki.meteohub.de/Generic_x86   ... send a note to Docbee (Boris) at Smartbedded.  I tried it way back and it worked with both the VMWare player and Virtualbox.  Maybe a version thing...

Thanks.

I havnt tried the manual install yet; was wondering if there was a pre-installed image.

I think you are right about the version thing. I'm running vSphere 5.5 on the Windows client as I'm on the free licence but the paid-for licence uses the newer web based client.

I'll just install it manually then  8-)

OK, got this working now. Quite simple when you know how
If anyone wants to do this in the future, this is how its done:

Firstly download the VMware images from the Meteohub web site and expand the archive.
Then download the VMware Converter program from the VMware site.
Convert the Meteohub VM into a installed VM on the ESXi host using the converter program, but don't select the automatic power on option. Also make sure the disk format is "thick".
If you are using the free 5.x licence for ESXi, make sure the VM version is set to 8 or below.
Edit the new VM settings to set USB (or serial) passthrough to connect the weather station to the new Meteohub VM.
Start the new VM and enjoy

The VM Converter program seems quite resource heavy - it quoted over 14 hours on my i7 laptop
I just spun up a new Windows 7 VM with 8 cores and 16gb ram and it completed the conversion in 5 minutes...

Had a play and it seems a great program and I really like it but unfortunately it doesn't upload regular webcam images to Wunderground, so the hunt for software continues  #-o

Actually it does upload images to the web - but only for the Ubiquiti AirCam.  I've asked Boris to make this generic.  FWIW, I use MB and simply rely on the Dlink IP Camera uplards.  Works just peachy.
