Storm app no longer supported and doesn't work
« on: May 24, 2018, 04:14:49 PM »
I have long used the WU Storm app on my iPhone. I always liked it because it combined my own weather data with radar and the WU forecast, with hourly and weekly forecasts that I found to be the most accurate of any, even days ahead. It also provided notifications and a widget on the notification screen. I also liked the layout and the interface. Best weather app ever! Lately I noticed that it had been popping up a screen telling me to get Storm Radar. I tried it and didn't like it. It doesn't show data from my station. So I uninstalled it and continued to use Storm. Today Storm popped up that screen again but this time it said Storm is no longer supported and Storm no longer works; no longer shows any weather data; only the radar part works. I am not happy. I know of no other app, except for the original WU app which isn't nearly as good, that will do what Storm did. I have apps that connect directly to my web site, but they are all in text mode, whereas Storm had a graphical display which worked well for wind direction. Such a nice app with great features, now gone. Sad.

Yes, this is really sad. The new replacement app is just not very functional in my opinion. The detailed path cast for storm cells is gone. I can't find a way to enter my weather station. There are annoying adds taking up screen space and no way to remove them. I grew to like the Storm app. It offered so much more information. The warning system was far far better. Like I said sad day. I uninstalled the new app and the old Storm app. I am on the hunt for something with path cast to my location and better storm cell information. It was a great APP... WTH!!!

Yep...that's exactly my thoughts with no way to get rid of the ads. I uninstalled it.

Bye Bye WU,

Best alternative I’ve for so far is Weather Mate Pro.

http://www.weathermate.net/

It allows you to use your PWS and has a good map with lots of options although not as good as Storm. Daily and hourly forecast are also available. Again not as nice a format as Storm. But much better than new Storm replacementent.

So far Weather Mate Pro was worth the $2. There is a free version as well.

This is the IOS app. There is an Android app with the same name that looks to be pretty bad. It hasn't been updated in 5 years. Stay away.

I had not seen this app before. Looks very promising! I used to be a diehard MRLevel 3 user until windows phones kind of nose-dived out of the market, so I had just been using Radarscope.  8-)

There are versions for iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.  I only have an iPad, but agree that this is a best-of-class app!

The developer of the wX Android app is looking for beta testers for his new IOS app.
The app will be called wXL23. If you are interested send me a PM and I will forward his email.

Looks to me that the weathermate app installs a configuration profile on apple devices. I had to go through extra steps to delete the profile after uninstalling the app, and this is not normally needed with apps that conform to Apple rules. Hassle.

I was getting spam ads generated by the profile even after uninstalling the app. Hassle. Beware.

Txbayou. Thanks for the warning about profiles.

I checked my iPhone and iPad and neither had a profile. I have the paid version of WeatherMate. I presume the profile was only for ads, but as you state not required.

@HandleMtP and others
Using the free version of the app I had unwisely along the way clicked to allow email updates. What this did was set up some kind of IOS mail account on my ipad, with a username and password not of my choosing, which began sending me ads. I uninstalled the app, but the email account remained active and kept on sending me spam, until I deleted the configuration profile.

Not supposed to happen: https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht205347

I've never had to do this with any other IOS app, free or paid for, and I won't be using either version of weathermate.

@txbayou. I checked the pro version again and I can not find any email update settings. Is it possible that an ad you clicked on and not the app itself made the update?  I'm not questioning your intelligence on this one you obviously understand device profiles. I'm just trying to understand the risk. I've already recommended WM to others. I'll recant that recommendation to them if I should.

@HandleMtP: I only tried the free version of Weathermate and went back to look at it again. It gets to a page where it wants to go to settings to change profiles. I reject that choice and it then goes to a page where there is only one button to click and (my bad) I assumed the first time around that this had something to do with the weather app, but it was actually part of the process of allowing the profile change that set up the spam email account through "red alert", which I, in retrospect, carelessly permitted. Looks like I'm not the only one:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8039386

As I said my bad for not paying attention, however it also doesn't say much complimentary about this weather app's business model if they allow their free/trial version to be flooded with traps. I never tried out the actual weather app because of this nonsense, but did have a learning experience, just not about weather. And I won't be sending them 2 bucks for the pro version.

YMMV. :-)

Simply put, the Storm app was never broken, so why was there a feeling it needed “fixing”?
I’d gladly pay to have it back...I had the ad free paid version for years, miss it already.

I wish they had given us a pay option. Most likely they laid off a whole department.
