APRS Postion Problem
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:36:07 PM »
Hey all,

I got a new computer last week and had to reinstall my VWS and APRS software and had to re enter all my location data and the gladstone family page http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/C2334  is telling me that my registered and APRS locations differ from each other about .9 miles. I want to have all that info true to my location. After checking my VWS software, APRS software, my WU site and other references, my correct location is the registered location and not the APRS. So why would the site say that my APRS location is off when in fact in the aprs software it is right on?
Thanks.

Hi Doug, could it possibly be a type of format entered issue? That is, decimal style format is entered when deg., min., sec's. type of format is required to get correct position indicated? This may help if so - http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html

Hey Dan, Neat Link. The aprs software (v. 2.0.1.0) that I'm using and have not used it before only has degrees and minutes as older versions included seconds I think. I think that may have something to do with it? Not sure if any one elce has run into this issue. VWS in fact does have all three variables. I included a screen cap of my vwsaprs screen.
Thanks.

This is from the QA Summary page:

The site location should be at the mark shown -- or very close. Clicking within the map area (or you can drag the 'DWXXXX' marker) will display the latitude/longitude of that point.

If the displayed location (or elevation) of the weather observing location is incorrect, please drag the marker to the right location (or click in the right location), and then send the updated information. Please note that we are trying to spot either the Stevenson Screen (or equivalent) or the location where the barometric readings are taken. The site location should be at the mark shown -- or very close. Clicking within the map area (or you can drag the 'DWXXXX' marker) will display the latitude/longitude of that point.

Note:XXXX  will be your CWOP ID (It may be a CW not a DW)

I hope this helps.  Good luck!  :)

Doug,

Looking at both the CWOP page and then the details of your raw data being uploaded, you will note that the LAt/Lon values shown on your Registered Location and that being shown in the raw APRS data feed DO NOT MATCH each other. Given that you are using VWSaprs to upload that software, I would suspect that you have a setup issue with VWSaprs.

CWOP Registered Location:
===================
Latitude: 41° 26' 35" N (deg min sec), 41.4432° (decimal), 4126.59N (LORAN)
Longitude: 81° 26' 36" W (deg min sec), -81.4433° (decimal), 08126.60W (LORAN)
Elevation: 334 metres (1096 feet) -- validated against 323 metres (1060 feet) from NED Contiguous U. S. 1/3E arc second elevation data
Location: Moreland Hills, OH US
County: Cuyahoga, OH

Your Findu.com APRS Raw data: (http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/raw.cgi?call=CW2334)

The correct degrees, minutes for your registered location should be: 41 degrees, 26.58333 minutes N and 81 degrees, 26.6 minutes W.

Here is an on-line GPS coordinate calculator that you can use find these numbers:

I don't use VWSaprs myself so am not familiar with the setup procedures for it but I would suspect that since it has Degrees Minutes that you would have to enter in the numbers I mentioned above to get it to output the correct LORAN coordinates for your location.

Comment - True, you can manually move the position marked on the map; HOWEVER, that does not change the actual position data being uploaded via VWSaprs. It merely changes the map display, that is all. He will still need to correct his DATA before everything will be in sync.

Thanks for the replies. I did included what my VWSaprs screen looks like and it does not have seconds and the older version did have all three variables and I do not re call ever having this type of problem. I wonder if there are old versions out there I can get? I'll do some looking around and e-mail the makers of VWSaprs and see what they can do. If I recall aren't they on this forum? Thanks all.
Thanks.

Doug,

I just downloaded the latest version of VWSaprs. It is v 2.0.1.0. I ran it on a system that I do not use for my weather station but was able to go into the Station setup screen and entered your coordinates of North 41 26.5833 and West 81 26.6. They entered just fine and when I exited out of the program and then restarted it, the values I entered came right back again. The only difference I noted was that the VWSaprs software apparently rounds-off the coordinates to two decimal points. Your numbers then wind up as being
North 41 Degrees 26.58 Minutes and West 81 Degrees 26.60 Minutes. I noticed that your entry shown in your attached jpg file show Minutes fields having 26.00 for both the Latitude and the Longitude.  You may want to go back to check your setup values before contacting Dr Tim West.

Additionally, when I was entering the data values via the little pop-up window, did not take my entries unless I hit the RETURN key.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but having the same issues. Using 2.0.2.0 of VWSaprs on a new machine and for some reason, it will not get the position correct. It has been a long time since setting this up years ago and getting old doesn't help.

My station ID is CW1773 http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?CW1773

As you can see, my position is off and no matter how I enter the position into VWSaprs, it doesn't correct itself.

Anyone wish to help this old guy?  ;)

You haven't provided enough information. If you believe that the location is wrong then how are we to determine your correct location? All that you have provided us is your current configuration with currently set location.

What do you believe is your correct location?

The correct location is the registered location, of course. No matter what I put in there, the error offset would change, but never go away. I could put myself in Florida, but never back to my registered location. That's really a screwy thing I guess with their system.

Anyway, sometime, in the early morning hours, under the cover of darkness, it finally corrected itself and the error offset went away. Nothing like making people run in circles attempting to make things right.

Your Registered Location is:

Lat 44.2121   Lon -71.9164   and these are Degrees decimal.   xx.xxxxx

But you will not see those numbers in VWSaprs configuration because that software needs the Latitude and Longitude entered in Degrees and then Minutes decimal. That means whole degree and whole minutes and then decimal minutes.

You must therefore convert from one method to the other if you want to compare. If you look at your stations raw data upload you'll notice that the same Degrees with Minutes decimal is what is used.
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/raw.cgi?call=CW1773

If you look at the top of the Gladstone Family page for your station you will notice that your registered location is actually given in 3 different coordinate systems....not just the two that I have so far discussed (D.d and DM.m) but it also lists your location using whole Degrees, whole minutes, and whole seconds (DMS).
