Topic: Hurricane Lane and Hawaii

Hurricane watches are now in effect for the 4 southern Hawaiian islands (Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai). Lane remains a high Category 4 but it appears like it will weaken before reaching the islands. This is pretty surprising for me, as I've never (in my short lifetime) seen such a large storm threaten the islands. Hopefully it will veer left before it has any major impacts, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Lane is forecast to move dangerously close to the main Hawaiian
Islands as a hurricane later this week, potentially bringing
damaging winds and life-threatening flash flooding from heavy
rainfall. As Lane is expected to be slow-moving as it nears the
islands, it will produce large and damaging surf, mainly along
exposed south and west facing shores. A Hurricane Watch has been
issued for Hawaii and Maui counties, and additional Tropical
Storm or Hurricane Watches may be required later today or tonight.

That path looks very similar to hurricane Iniki in 1992 when it turned and made a direct hit on Kauai. I was there for Iniki and remember it well. We were passing through Hawaii heading for the Cook Islands. Our flight was the last commercial flight into Honolulu that day. We flew out two days later after the storm passed off-shore of Waikiki. Even Oahu had some pretty significant damage from the wind and waves.

Let's hope Lane won't do the same thing as Iniki did. My thoughts and prayers are with all Hawaiian residents.

Lane has now reached Category 5 status, (though it will weaken as it gets closer to the islands). The cone is now showing almost direct hit on Oahu!

The outer bands of rain have reached the Big Island, and hurricane warnings are in effect up to Molokai now. Lane's barometric pressure in currently at 935 millibars, making it lower than Iniki's pressure ever was. The storm is once again a Category 4 and will continue to weaken, but I feel like any disturbance stronger than a tropical storm will cause some significant impacts on the Hawaiian islands (because their weather barely changes over the course of a year).

Remember Jurassic Park 25 years ago during Hurricane Iniki. A lot of the rain footage was being filmed during hurricane.  I wonder if there filming again.

Models are favoring Hurricane Lane missing the islands now. It is already weakening quite a bit, so things are looking better.
