I was reading an article yesterday about Cleveland throwing them out, and a university in the city rounding them up and making Bird come pick them up.

Maybe I'm going crazy, but I seem to recall an article over the weekend where people in some bigger city were rounding them up and tossing them into a body of water.

Where some people see a public nuisance, I see a free source of abandoned lithium ion batteries for the picking.  Publish a video on YouTube showing how to gut those scooters and make whole-house battery packs, and the Bird problem will be over before you know it.....

You may have read something off the wire from the LA Times.

Down in the Los Angeles area, the Bird and Lime scooters and their riders have become a nuisance, riding double, on sidewalks, no helmets, scooters left lying everywhere, no permits, etc. The scooters have been tossed in dumpsters, the ocean and toilets, set afire, and broken.

And, I agree, they would make a great source of raw materials. :)

There are several other articles and editorials available about this if you search: la times bird scooters.

The scooter stampede of 2018 is great news for urban transportation.

Here, ER reports are going up because people falling off of them.  Hitting large cracks and rolling over the top of them. Minneapolis has allowed them, I am not sure if they are around during the winter.  Another suburb has bikes. They have been pulled off for winter.

I know if I find one in my yard from another city-the damn thing is going in the trash.

SIMPLE:  *If* it contains a motor -- be it internal combustion or electric -- it is a "motorized" vehicle and should be licensed, tagged, and INSURED...or impounded!

...or donated to the nearest school as parts for STEM projects!

Having just sat through a few months of grand jury service here in New Yorkistan and being repeatedly read the state's definition of a motor vehicle, the operator also needs to be licensed to even ride the thing.  If it doesn't move under muscle power or on rails, it is a motor vehicle and subject to all Vehicle & Traffic laws.....

OSU-Stillwater is preparing to lift its ban on scooters in place since October, once it chooses which scooter company to award permits for operation on campus.  https://www.stwnewspress.com/news/osu-preparing-to-choose-scooter-vendor/article_6548710c-f437-11e8-8508-23e68f343c93.html

I think the scooters passed their peak about a couple of months ago when there were over a 100 of them scattered around downtown and then more on street corners on the way to the OSU campus.  The city impounded a bunch of them for being illegally parked.  Scooters are still around, but not as thick. My guess now is they will last all winter, unless it's a bad one.  The worst accident with injury I heard of was where an OSU student broke his ankle.

I wouldn't want to be crazy enough to ride one without a helmet, so haven't yet. I usually use my car to get around, except for occasional walks to the nearby Wal-Mart and a few other stores and eating places.  The walk is good exercise, which I would not be getting on a scooter.
