Bad deep storm forecasted
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:59:02 AM »
Only posting this here just in case some one up here has not heard about it but does read this board. As for  it going to US  it not.

A giant Pacific storm headed toward Alaska's western coast has the potential to cause major coastal flooding, serious beach erosion, heavy snowfall and widespread damage, according to the National Weather Service. A bulletin issued Monday by the Weather Service said the storm is expected to intensify "into one of the most severe Bering Sea storms on record." The agency is describing the storm as "extremely dangerous and life-threatening." Areas affected stretch from Scammon Bay in the south all the way north to Point Hope, with blizzard warnings issued starting Tuesday. "Gusts to 70 mph can be expected along the (Russia's) Chukotsk Peninsula and in areas near Kotzebue," the Weather Service said. "Winds of 60 to 75 mph are expected over St. Lawrence island and the Bering Strait coast. Winds are expected to approach hurricane force over the Chukchi Sea and northern Bering Sea. The strong winds will generate seas to as high as 20 feet over the Chukchi Sea ... and to 15 to 25 feet over the northern Bering Sea. "The strong winds will push large amounts of water into Norton Sound ... raising sea levels to as high as 8 to 9 feet above normal Tuesday night through Wednesday night. The high sea levels combined with high waves will produce severe beach erosion and major coastal flooding along the northern and eastern shores of Norton sound and along the Bering Strait coast. High water levels will produce coastal flooding along the southern shore of Norton Sound. Strong winds and wave action may push ice in Norton Bay onshore." Blizzard conditions and heavy snow are forecast throughout the region, with as much as 14 inches possible along the southern Seward Peninsula, the Weather Service said.

Just took a look at the radar.  YOWIE!  Looks massive and if the jetstream drops it down, Western Canada might get a white Christmas about a month and half early!

Scalphunter,

Do you have any specific internet links that cover weather in your area and across the Aleutians? Some posted links would be great for all of us to watch the progress of this storm. It sounds like a real challenge for those in it's path.

For you - stay safe and away from the surf!!!

Thanks but I already had that one. Am more interested in animated links, if possible.

I thought that perhaps Scalphunter might have some links that those of us in the lower-48 don't have...

Just reported central core pressure is at 948 mb...and dropping due to  below  zero air being pulled in from Siberia.

I was just going to post the surface analysis when I saw that pressure which is about 20mb lower than I saw this morning.  That one is 943mb.
It looks like there is a barrier island out in the strait.  Is that populated and if so is it going to be evacuated?

{I have tried to post but it won't show the picture.  It just shows a paperclip attach symbol.
Never had that before ](*,)}

Gambel and Savoonga out on St Lawence island .  Rocky and both villages are at sea level. reporting winds at 70 mph. there been some evacation but short days now  this time year. Even mediavacfligths are hunkered down.

!974 storm with it's 27.25  barometric pressure  was the track that this storm is taking.

I can see where those winds are coming from. Looks pretty intense.

It must be serious, now it's on CNN.

Chip Leeper, incident commander with the Nome government, said "Most people are a hardy lot.  We don't scare easy."

With winds like that I wonder how they can "really" measure the precipitation? It seems any snow that falls is just going to be blown away and thus, not be measurable. You certainly can't go out and stick a measuring stick into the snow and read it. They must have automated/heated rain gauges for areas like this. Anyone know how they do this?
