Winds of North Dakota
« on: June 22, 2016, 09:17:37 AM »
I moved from in the city of Bismarck ND, where my wind record was 42 mph according to my VP2.  Since moving out into the country, I've broken that record many times.

Last night a front came through.  Broke my previous record of 74 mph by 10mph!  84 mpg and the only damage I had was one aspen tree broke.

I did lose the siding on the west side of my house, shop, and shed last Thursday night to hail.  Ranged from nickle to golf ball.

The running joke in ND as to why it's so windy; "Montana blows, Minnesota sucks".

Whats odd about it WU says 84 mph but graph is showing 67 mph. Graph follows the data well from my experience. Almost like a glitch of some kind, either way it was a heck of a wind gust.
Curious what caused it and did you report into local NWS office. This would be something they surely would be interested in.

I looked at the CWOP data and it only shows 37 mph. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mesowest/timeseries.php?wfo=twc&sid=C2059&num=48
This reminds me of when moisture got into my anemometer and caused a glitch.

My CWOP & WU matches most of the time which is odd too. Check my gust of 41mph today it shows everywhere.

My WU Summary section at the top shows the 84mph gust.  But the data down below doesn't.

From looking at the wind damage my neighbors have received, I would say 84 is accurate.  One boat turned over.  About 5 miles away near the river with large cottonwood trees, trees down.

Odd that CWOP wouldn't have shown that.

Okay sounds like it was a strong wind. I have seen erroneous wind readings with rain occur with the Davis anemometer.
The only way I fixed mine after replacing the whole wire was eventually changing the anemometer itself.

I've been keeping an eye on the anemometer since the hail storm in case there was damage.  It seems to be operating normally.  They whole VP2 took some major hail without issue.  Only thing that happened is the SS wires I hot glued to the top for birds, half the wires got bent over.  I just bent them back...

I guess that saying is everywhere.
