Windblown Ice

Sort of weather related photos of what can happen if we get a strong northeast wind in the spring when the ice on Lake Huron and the Saginaw Bay is breaking up.

Saw those pics on a site last week....  crazy.

When filling out an insurance claim would that be considered a flood or hail or avalanche...?

I would sure try all three. It would be interesting to know if this type of damage would be covered by insurance at all. The damage is definitely water damage (albeit "frozen" water).

A number of years ago, FEMA attempted to have our shoreline put in the same flood insurance category as the ocean coasts down South that are subject to hurricanes. At that time, they told us that wind blown water from the Lake would not be covered by federal flood insurance. So, they were basically asking people to pay hurricane zone insurance rates to cover events that would not happen here. Needless to say, that did not go over well with shoreline owners here.

The regular homeowners policies would probably not have covered it either since they would have considered it a "flood".

I am going to have to try and track down the folks who own those houses and ask them if there was any insurance coverage for the damage.

At least there is no mold associated with this type of water damage (assuming you can bull doze the ice away before it melts... )

as long as this mass does not knock the house off the foundation or do real structural damage, broken glass and split wood can be fixed a lot easier than true flooding...

Just think of the phone call from the wife to the husband.....

Hello honey, Uhh, remember when you said you wanted to add an outside ice box for your beers in the summer, while doing yardwork?  Well guess what?......
