WS-1001 Outdoor temp sensor stuck
« on: September 18, 2017, 07:04:38 AM »
Just wondering if others have had issues with their outdoor temp sensor failing and reading max values constantly?
A couple of weeks back the sensor suddenly flat lined at the min -40 temp, and then after some jigging around and reset of the console and the outdoor unit, the temp then shot up to +60 and has flat lined there ever since.
All other sensors are operating fine, and it hasn't mattered how many resets or cleaning that I've done it hasn't made a difference.

Is there any way to replace the temp sensor, or is the unit stuffed?
Just in case, the link to the WU page is https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=IATHELST2#history

Hi,
I had the same issue last week and the rechargeable batteries in the outdoor unit needed replacing.
I inserted some I had lying around and initially the temperature stayed at 60C with the console saying batteries were low, but the following day all working fine.

I hadn't considered swapping them, since everything else was reading fine, but can't hurt to give it a go!

@m841, when did you buy your unit, before or after Jan 2016? It appears that units sold after this date have been upgraded to use the SHT31 sensor. Units before this has the bead temp sensor.

You can use standard AA batteries for testing, but then replace them with re-chargeable ones. The original batteries is good for about a year.

It was purchased about 13 months ago, so yes after Jan '16,but at the same time who knows how old stock can be!

About time to replace them anyway. Had to do mine just after the warranty expired.  :-)

Just changed the batteries now, and the outdoor temp reading is coming back down to normal gradually.

Didn't consider it to be the batteries since all of the other stats were reading fine from the unit!

Maybe just the fact that you removed the batteries rebooted it.

After a huge temp spike on mine I used the reset button and followed the other instructions and now it seems ok.

I might have spoken too soon, as it ended up plummeting to -40c instead. I'll try a reset of the outdoor unit on the weekend as a factory reset of the panel didn't work either.

To clarify, the SHT31 is for the Davis VP2, not Ambient.

My unit (pre 2016) use the bead thermistor. Apparently, post Jan 2016, Fine Offset also started to use the SHT31 chip for their temp/hum sensor. Cant find where I read it.

Well looking at their web site, I don't see any of their PWS with anything even close to the specs of an SHT31. Matter of fact, an SHT11 would out perform them.

This is where,  and yes, memory failing, it is a SHT30 and not 31.

My temp sensor packed up again.  I'm returning it.  Hope the next one lasts longer than a month!  ](*,)

Looks like it is a stuffed sensor, as a few resets, battery swaps, and pleading hasn't resolved things.

Any suggestions on the best place to get a new sensor from others experience? Even better if there is an Australian source!

I got a 10 pack of these a while back. They work fine -

Would it be possible to post a picture of your sensor?

I never got around to checking this out when I got back, but with an xmas break there are times to get things done.

Looks like I need to replace it with a SHT30-D as per this thread https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=32189.0 as the sensor is the same as senrabyar's
