AcuRite 00589 only reads up to 12 MPH
« on: July 13, 2015, 04:19:05 AM »
I've had my AcuRite 00589 (Amazon)for about 3 months now and it's been through its share of storms where I guarantee wind speeds were above 12 MPH. It only shows winds speeds at 12 MPH with a high indication of higher gusts.

I was curious as to why it might do this. Is it because it's only "accurate" up to 12 MPH because that's as fast as the gauge can spin?

What is your console showing for average and peak speeds?  Are they also 12 mph?

How high off the ground is the anemometer mounted?  Generally the lower it is, the lower the wind speeds will be.  The standard height for measuring wind speed is around 33 feet (10 meters).  Obviously not everyone can do that, so it's common to mount them lower.

Have you checked the wind cups to see if they turn freely and are not dragging on the lower case?

Average wind speeds is only showing up to 12 MPH as well. It's mounted onto a pole that sticks up from our back porch - can't be more than 20 feet off the ground.

Yes I have and they do turn freely.

This could be a location problem. If the station is mounted to a pole attached to a porch, this sounds quite close to your house. If it is only 20 ft or so, then there will be significant blocking of air patterns with the building.

Can you post some photos?

Right... Google Photos is a little messy with embedding photos. Let's try Flickr...

I was trying to find a working version of the CWOP_Guide.pdf online, but I can't seem to find one. I had it stored on my own computer.

Here is an excerpt on anemometer siting:

Quote
Figure 13. Anemometer Siting Standard
  • 10 meters (33 feet) above ground level (AGL)
  • If there are obstructions above 8 meters, anemometer should be at least 2 meters
(7 feet) above obstructions (trees and/or buildings) within immediate vicinity of
    weather station (20 meters horizontally)
  • Anemometer mast should be level and orientated such that wind direction
    measurements are true north
  • Anemometer and mast should be absolutely level

I think that you will need to mount it significantly higher than you have it now. Don't worry if you can't comply with all this, just do your best. I think that your 12 mph problem is related to this issue rather than anything with the station per se. I bet your roof-line is causing blockage and strange vortices that are affecting the readings.
